We need to stop paying devs and publishers unfinished products.

I will if it ever goes Steam-free... deal?
That's completely against your best interest though.
Steam has very good refund policies. It's also a go-to portal for gamers, which translates to a lot more sales. If a developer makes the decision to go steam-free, chances are that they are expecting a huge amount of cancellations/refund demands that they're unwilling to honor. I.e. they know their game is ****.
Case in point the recent bethesda, ubisoft and ea games.

Which is a bit funny since gamers are review bombing Metro 1 and 2 on Steam, openly admitting it's because of Metro going to Epic store instead of Steam.
So I wonder what the backlash would be.

Why?
Will they put in more work into the game that actually keeps the lights on right now instead of in a year?

I think you're misunderstanding though, I'm not saying it shouldn't be on Steam, rather there should be a version available that doesn't require it; just like MWO and Battletech.

Can you please specify why it is important to help people understand? None of the MWO addons included in the pre-order interest me. If they are following their resource plan, PGI will release MW5 to the public; or they will run out of resources and won’t. I don’t see how me pre-ordering will change that. When they release MWO, the released product will dictate if I buy it or not.

Because it's still a source of revenue for the developers, which in turn funds the game development. That's not a hard Concept.
Look at Metro Exodus being an Epic-Games Launcher exclusive. Is really having more share worth than just having a high profit in the first place?

to save Terra from the foreign invaders! - Oh wait it doesn't go that far.
to experience what a REAL government shutdown looks like! - Nope that's Ubi.
to save the IP from a dark age of no games being made? Not likely. And if it turns out bad? Well, i'm somewhat inclined to agree with the steam discussion randoms that say, "Never Pre-Order".

Most games will launch as a stand-alone as well as on steam. But a developer that chooses to only launch without a steam option often means their confidence in their new product is so low that they anticipate a huge number of refund demands.
Having the steam option basically says the developer stands by their product and are willing to bet real money that most people who buy it will enjoy it enough to not demand a refund.
Everyone benefits from that whether they play on steam or not (as is in your case).

but I want any connections with my MWO account at all
I just want to be some joe nobody like we used to buy games from the base PX/BX or best buy
I made to many mistakes in the MWO universe
also all my games have become prized possessions (MW2, MW4 for example)
I don't know maybe someone can change my mind about DLC games
one last thing PGI was going to have a meeting with Microsoft in Jan so I am also curious about that

Thats also the only reason i would suggest anyone 'pre-order' mw5. If you enjoy mwo at all, play it enough to get a use out of the mech pack or would have picked up the marauder II pack anyways then it would make sense to pick up the pre-order. Normally Im against preorders as it avoids me buying games without reviews. That way I rarely get burned and i think its better for the overall health of the gaming community.
If the reviews are positive i would very much encourage everyone to pick up the game though as it supports the IP, encourages furure titles and DLC, encourages investment into yhe IP from Microsoft and supports a company that has improved.
