I voted yes, as in I wish they would so I could teach them the error of their ways. Do that more than once in a game faithful to BT and you're going to get wrecked.

Sniping SEEMS fine as long as it is not ridiculously overused. A couple of shots here and there to weaken your quarry should do it, but don't sit behind some cover waiting until someone comes wandering onto your screen before popping out and cutting them down at extreme range. Over-sniping'll just ruin the fun.

Maybe we sould have a viable "sniper" type of mech. One that is fairly weak but powerful at range. People would be given the option to equip their mech that way. If possible, we would make a way of taking out jump snipers all together and just keeping to the unwritten but...well... "polite" (in want of a better word) rules.

i think it will be comletley map dependant. besides, they keep saying there is going to be a lot of city maps to play on, so i dont think jump sniping will become much of an issue due to the amount of cover.
its certainly a valid tactic, opportunities to do just need to be balanced. its not fun when thats all anyone does all game.

Ack, this is a threat that just won't go away!
AND you guys brought it over to MechSpecs too!!!!
If I didn't have my head I would be pulling out hair with this one.

The simple existence of the Hollander and the Hollander 2 shows that sniping is somewhat viable. However I got really, really tired of the jump-snipers in MW4:Mercs. Heck I hated it in the campaign when the computer did it to me. Is it a viable tactic? Yes. Does it work? Yes. Is it annoying as hell? Oh most definitely

Do you know how many jumpsniping Nova Cats I took out playing Mercs? They'd do their little floating bit and I'd be behind a hill waiting for them to pop up so I could put a LGR round or PPC through their cockpit.

That's if you exclusively wait for them to come out. Really annoying when you're brawling with someone else just to have a gauss round slam into your rear armor.

*shrugs* I enjoy sniping, but I don't particularly enjoy jumpsniping. And to be honest, the only unfair fight is the one you lose. Everything short of hacks and other forms of cheating should be fair game, but I think there should be a definite Darwinian element where stupid tactics are involved.

....and on Alicia's informative and very well thought out dissertation on jump-sniping I think it's safe to say that this topic is now finished.
