I suggest you stick to the MadDog.
I run mine with single UAC/20, double SRM6A and double Heavy Medium Laser.
One SRM6A in each shoulder (so I can use the +15 armor quirk certain MDD shoulders come with), and the ballistic arm I think comes with a +20 armor quirk?
Honestly it's a wonderful brawler and I didn't mod mine for Survival but Firepower, Mobility (full speed tweak, some acc/dec) and Operations.

Mad Dog is so fragile though. That is my only complaint with it.

Why are you anti-Ebon Jag? Amazing build versatility on that chassis. If you want a brawlier mech just swap out LRMs for ATMs on your Mad Dog. That costs nothing and its very hard not to get good damage numbers.

I don't consider ATMs brawler weapons due to the 120m minimim range requirement. He could however set up a Splatdog with multiple SRM launchers and maybe 4 or so ER SLs or something for good measure. That is more what I think of when I think Brawl.

But it's not. I'm telling you I'm running it without Survival skill tree because I run the +15 armor shoulders and a +20 arm.
That's 65 armor on Side Torsos and 60 on the arm WITHOUT SURVIVAL SKILL TREE. You know what has armor around that value? Clan Assaults and Quirked Inner Sphere.
A Roughneck without Survival tree has 62 ST armor. With Survival it's 72. MadDog with Survival tree and +15 STs has 76!

Still gonna say it's fragine? Thing's got armor if you don't build it to spam LRMs.
On top of all that it can fit a decent amount of weaponry and moves at freaking 81km/h! 87 if you skill its mobility, in which case it moves like a heavy medium.
So... skill it to have armor like an assault or make it move like a medium with armor of a heavier heavy.

Hold on, I'll post screenshots.

Grab a Warhammer 6R then come back and tell us how much you love it.

Thank you for all the suggestions guys. I already use my MDD for LRM support and not a big fan of it when I have to be close. I don't like my weapon options. I am going to look more at the marauder, linebacker, orionIIC, and the warhammer6r. Though, I don't really know "what builds" to run on them.

I am trying out a 6R with 2 RAC2s, 6 medium lasers, maxed out armor, and the rest of the mech are heat sincs. Would this be any good?

I don't like clan AC weapons. The bursting multiple rounds bothers me so EBJ severely limits my preferred weapon options. My friend I always play with runs an EBJ-B and I am trying to compliment him rather than just be in the same mech.

He's a new player. Laser vomit is the easy way to be competitive quickly.

Warhammer, Thunderbolt, or Hellbringer.

Medium pulse lasers for brawling, or large/large pules/ERmediums for mid range trading.

BL-7-KNT with 9 MPL and a Targeting Computer Mk I. Bind MPLs into three groups of three. Successive group fire or fire two groups together then the third as follow up depending on the situation.

Can be a pretty devastating MPL brawler.

Assume the situation will always warrant and do a group of 4 and a group of 5. Alpha-strike all 9 if the situation permits.

If you are staring long enough to fire three groups of MPL, you are missing the point of the weapon.

heat management has nothing to do with maximum sustained DPS that is limited by heat... and brawl mechs want to be fast to get into optimal range while still having armor left.
