1NB looks like a great PPFLD platform with that 20% velocity quirk. I bought the standard pack and am running 2 PPC 1 UAC5 1 AC5 on one of the other variants, but that one would be better.
1N2 looks like it can do Heavy Gauss and 5 ML.

As for builds for you guys new to the CHP. A class 20 AC (any type) and 4ERML with rockets to spare is always fun at 81kph.

The MC cost of one Vapor eagle is almost the cost of a basic pack for 3 of them ....

They have zero durability quirks so no, they're not tanky, you can't tank with them. They just spread the damage very good with JJ's. Also for their tonnage they're big.

If you don't intend to use real money on them then whichever interests you most; if you might buy the Champion with real money then I'd suggest the CHP-1N2 to try it out so if you liked the mech you'd then spend $20 to get the 1N, 2N, and 3N, and qualify for the end of year Inner Sphere mech reward.

I would personally do 4 [ER]ML and then two ballistic weapons of choice (i.e. something like 4 ERML + 2 RAC/2). You could also try using 4 mediums plus some MRMs but that would put all your eggs in one basket so to say (most of the guns would be in the LT).
You could also just do one big ballistic but at that point you might as well use the CHP-1N2.

I'd suggest to first decide on your primary weaponry then fill out your energy weapons and engine size based on what tonnage you've got left.
I've got the Champion collector's pack and if I remember correctly I've got the CHP-1N(S) equipped with Dual LB10Xes and the CHP-1N has Dual LRM15s with Artemis.
Dual MRM30s works too, but then you'd either have to go with a standard engine to use the energy hardpoints in the torso or make do with two CT energy weapons and a light fusion engine. I prefer to use my CHP-2N as my MRM Champion (with an MRM40), and occasionally swap it out for a triple RAC2 build.

I have to disagree with a couple points. I really like the Champion and I think the Blood Asp is pretty good, but the Vapor Eagle is a very good chassis and my personal opinion of mechs over the last year the Corsair, Vulcan, and Fafnir are also good to excellent. I didn't get the Flea but players seem to be doing well in that mech too.
I do acknowledge that the Vapor Eagle feels slower than a comparable 50-55 ton mech at the same speed but it's an illusion; the Vapor Eagle has long, spindly legs so it sits taller than its counterparts so you're higher off the ground at the same speed which makes it feel slower. The same thing happens with the Vulcan but I got used to it when it dropped so I was comfortable with tall medium mechs when the Vapor Eagle dropped.

They will do what they always do and kill mobility or "fix the hit boxes". Trust me, once they're everywhere and the crying starts they will be nerfed.
