tl;dr - In the end, it was both the community and the devs that finished off mwo. It could have been so much better
------------------------
I know this comment is going to get lots of hate, and it's ok. But sometimes, the truth just isn't popular. What killed MWO was the combination of
community and devs. The community wanted to turn this into another fps. They wanted counterstrike with mechs. When the Clan nerfs came around because everyone who played IS hated how OP clantech is (obviously never read nor cared about the lore) the devs complied. I have played mechs from both sides, and honestly, other than a very few minor differences, everything is equal. With the neutering of faction play, there really isn't any reason to choose a side.
The devs could have switched up game play to make it more balanced out, had more play options, etc, but no. Instead they took the "easy way" and made everything equal.
Liberalism and political correctness once again kills.
To make it worse, the community has been
toxic. I've spent the last round of playing with voip turned completely off because there is always a bunch of salty people taking their anger out on their "teammates."
I prefer to play a game for fun, not to get chewed out because a match didn't go the way someone hoped. Again, it's an example of the fps style bring brought to BattleTech.
Maps: Yeah, they are so old and have been around so long that once you have a map down, there's nothing new except
constant nascar. Not fun.
Quirks: If I recall correctly, PGI said that there would be no more quirks around the time they brought out the new skill tree. Yup, we got quirks.
Skill Tree: I was really hoping that it would be flexible enough so that one could really mess with the skill set to fit your personal play style. Nope. It was basically modules repackaged. You need specific skills purchased to even play the mech correctly (or without having your uac's jam constantly).
I've had good friends start leaving this game years ago and I took quite a break myself. I've come back from time to time only to be routinely disappointed. The worst part was the Warhammer IIC. As I spent a lot of my life playing MW2 and then to see the disappointment of this chassis in MWO... well, that was another example of high hopes dashed once again.
I knew when PGI started giving out a ton of free stuff that the game was going downhill quickly. This just confirms my suspicions. I am not an early backer of MW5 and I refuse to be. I think Russ has a huge ego that is actually killing the franchise. Therefore, I do not see putting my money into a project that may very well be ruined by him as MWO was. I do play lots of Battletech, however and enjoy that a lot.
I just hope someday that Battletech will go back to its roots and stop trying to be a FPS shooter with armor. The game is much more than that. Honestly, the last simulator style BattleTech game that was any good was MW3. I have no idea why people went bonkers over MW4. It wasn't that great. It was good and fun, but not as great as everyone makes it out to have been.
IMO, it was both the community and the devs that finished off mwo.
It could have been so much better.
Ok, flame away.
