Just be careful, there's a lot of people in that 2nd group who spend their time "manoeuvring" behind cover and only rise to poke at the locks the first group are maintaining while being cut up.

This is called "trading." It's one of the best ways to play the game.

I consider it leeching locks, a trader will pop their head up and find their own targets if there aren't any marked.

dude..

dishing out alphas, and using a lock to know where to dish it to, is how it's done. ofc you get your own lock, as active players do that anyway. "lock-leeching" is a term used to describe what indirect-fire-lurmers do; and it's bad.

exposing part of your mech to put an alpha where it belongs is a basic principle; have you EVER played a high-alpha-lasvom or sth? because that's how they -work-
you don't park them in the open for minutes while you cool off.
I could, but won't go on ..

I for one am glad I actually help out my team instead of acting like this is League of Legends and the Jarl List matters.

Lock-leeching describes a play style where players don't acquire their own targets and instead piggyback off the locks of others.

This is most apparent with indirect lurmers but can be done with any weapons system. An ATM boat that acquires a lock, exposes himself to fire, then drops back into cover while his missiles track to target is still leeching. The same thing applies to a PPC boat.

We all leech locks on occasion, it's natural and under the right circumstance beneficial (both for ourselves and the team). But if that's the only way you play then we have a problem.

I don't think I've ever seen a single player who trades exclusively at pre locked targets with direct fire

As long as you're "helping" out on the red team that's perfectly fine with me =) I'd take a lance of lock leeching alpha striking 3 kills per person bunch of toxic jarl worshipping try hards over a gaggle of charlie humpers any day

I'm too polite to answer that honestly to somebody that has been playing this game for as long as you have.
it's a fundamental basis.
but hey - feel free to turn your HUD off, mate. no evil "free locks" will interfere with you that way; and pls don't bring that philosophy of yours to FW Posted Image some people just don't want to learn.

*done here before I get redacted for anything*

i played my ultraviolet today. my biggest issue was getting people to clear my gunports so i could actually shoot the enemy without team damage. i hate it when other players dont give you enough space to fight. getting left behind wasn't such a big issue.

I've seen people that "actually help" by leaving the power position to jump to the low ground to "flank", causing the team to get surrounded by enemies who eventually muscle their way around.

I've seen people that "actually help" by jumping in front of assault mechs making them waste heat.

I've seen people that "actually help" by running into enemy firing line and dying within the first minute of the match.

I've seen people that "actually help" by staying with the charlie lance and not doing anything, not even firing at the targets that the assaults and heavies are firing at.

I'd rather take those "toxic, comp, try-hard players" than the people that "actually help". Now if I could only stop those toxic, comp, try-hard players to stop stealing MY damage!

Except that Jarl's shows exactly how much you help your team. If your W/L is above 1.0 then you help your team win, if its below 1.0 then you help your team lose.

LOL, and what's the problem for lights to cover the assaults? One light or fast medium mech present in assault lance gives a big boost for their morale and can do many great things. It's plenty of action when you try to prevent assaults from dying. Honorable death in rearguard is a good way to go.

I help the assaults when I can, but not to the exclusion of everything else and not to the detriment of my own gameplay.

well, if you are not willing to understand the answer to that, which was laid out over 4 pages for you at this point..

look.. there are people in assaults who yell "cover my butt, support your assaults", who also usually die (or worse: live) with <200dmg at the end;
and there are those, who spend their time manouvering to the right spots, all the while shooting the reds to the ground, who end the match with 800+dmg (or often nearly double that, actually).

if you fall into the first group, maybe you should get a faster mech (read: heavy or medium), until you figure out what the first group does wrong and the second group does right.

I red the answers and I understand the people who says they don't want or don't see a reason to cover the assaults. Still, anyone can try different approach. The problem is also with an assault lance itself. Charlie lance often starts to spread out at the beginning of the match. Faster assaults try to keep up with the pack. Slower try to keep up with anybody they can. Why they don't go together? Four assaults can defend themselves for some time. And maybe even some relief will come. About assault dmg it was said somewhere here why 200 dmg in assault happens and why it's no shame in some specific conditions. Sometimes I'm in the first group (my mistakes also counts here), sometimes I'm in the second. I know one thing. It's very nice feeling when someone is trying to cover your a.ss.

read again and try to understand: it is detrimental to the overall goal (win) to do that in QP. dude, don't get me wrong: I don't wanna sound snarky or sth. a lot of us started out as you do, with dreams of actual teamplay etc; I'm sorry to say, but for the reasons explained over the last -5- pages, that is just not a thing.

QP is BY ITS VERY NATURE the "egoistic mode" in this game, so you won't see that happen. well, maybe you will, but the more you play, the more you realise it's -again- detrimental;
one assault going left is one dead blue guy; another blue guy trying to safe his as$ are 2 dead blue guys. and so on. it is that simple.

and the 200dmg in an assault; it happens. there's no shame in it.
it ALSO says that you did something wrong, and that you should learn from it;
no shame at all, given you ~try~ to improve.

If I am in an assault and know where to be and how to get there why should I change my play to suit a player who had no clue and is not going to contribute anyway? Having all four assaults stick to the slowest one/the one that is the worst at finding efficient paths just ends in four dead assaults and a thrown game.

I am all for team play, I think my participation in comp would show that. But the thing to do in QP is put yourself in a position to have a positive impact on the match, not try to help others who cannot help themselves. I am happy to provide advice to people and I try to argue against bad calls (like going basement on hpg, idling in low ground on Canyon, etc.) but I am not going to toss my match away because someone else is putting themselves in a position to be farmed, nor do I expect anyone to do that for me.

I do empathise with players who insist that their team should cover stragglers, because that is the "right" thing to do. Unfortunately the tools for issuing commands to the company or your lance in the game are lacklustre (e.g. Objectives don't appear overlayed in 3D) and there is no pregame lobby to discuss tactics in. Both of these tools would help get people on the same page and unfamiliar players into position in game. Yes yes "go play FP nyerrr" but really even QP should have these features. As it stands, there are two strategies you can employ that sadly definitely will win you games:

1. Embrace Nascar.

2. Ignore team mates in trouble.

It's an unfortunate state of affairs but the quicker you guys begging for us to help slow Assaults embrace the dark side, the quicker you'll be winning games.
