But other then that I'd love to try that, if only as a limited event or a specific QP game mode.
I often use QP to level up but also to try out my new FP builds, and most of the time I land on a QP map and/or game mode where that new FP build can't be tested at all.

real problem is when you have lots of mechs and so finding the one you want in the alloted time might be difficult. so perhaps have it where you set up an deck for each weight class, put your favorites in there, and you can pic one after the map vote.

Like a proper game where people bring mechs suited for the map and are finally able to use appropriate tactics instead of merry-go-round the middle?

In Instant Action mode, the MM (such as it is) is grouping people based on Tiers and tonnage. If you are able to choose mechs based on the map selected, then the balancing act (such as it is) would be even worse.
You can bring 4 mechs for a specific map and mode in FW. That's how it should be 'cause Instant Action and FW should be different and more people should be given the incentive to play FW. Unfortunately FW isn't the busiest throughout the day but that doesn't mean Instant Action should have some of those features.
If you want to make QP have some meaning, then make the FW conflicts be in someway weighted slightly by the results in of QP. It just might push people to enter FW for more features.

How about notifying the other side of the changed tonnage?

Could you imagine Polar, anything? Or Frozen Assault? Caustic?
It would become either a LRM fest, more so than it already is, or just a ERL camp fest... Great 15min game coming up really improving that gameplay experience.
Not to mention the complexities in coding/locking people into a specific class of mech they searched in otherwise you'd end up with potentially 8 lights vs 8 assaults.
Why people dont/cant think of these glaring issues is beyond me.

Yeah so even more waiting time in the lobby.
After you've just spend 2-10mins searching...

End of the day - it'll never happen. You're better off discussing sending someone to another Solar system within the next 100 years. That has a greater chance of happening than this.

And while it's understandable, that PGI are afraid of some sort of exploiting, like all players having LRMs on Polar, but this really should be changed. As I've already said many times, MechLab exists in this game for reason. If all players will play some universal Meta builds, like Medium 'Mech with ER-PPCs, there won't be any room for other builds.

The answer is staring you in face, my friend. The "Mech roles" are a thing in Faction War. Please leave Instant Action mode the way it is. We should be striving to push for a better FW experience. Instant Action is more or less an introductory mode. FW is the end-game mode where you can bring your collection of mechs and work as a team with a specific role that you want to play as.

They would have an actually even bigger advantage over people running bad builds.

Or even worse : All players having LRMs on Crimson Strait !
Because the new enhanced low arc direct sight LRMs have been super duper OP optimized for tunnel combat, so that definitely counts as some sort of exploiting PGI should understandably be afraid of.
Fear the tunnel lurm !
