I prefer 1 for the solo campaign but 2 was the better for multiplayer.

With that said, Mechwarrior 4 all the way.

From what I have dseen, I would have liked MA:1 better. It seemed like it was the most grounded when it comes to BT. It was also closer to the timeline I am more comfortable with.
MA:2 looked to be the better game functionally, but the hopping in and out of mechs a long with the Jihad era just sort of puts me off of it.
Is play both, but I think MA:2 would feel too foreign for me to really get into it as a Battletech game.

MechAssault 2 removed your ability to pick Mechs entirely, as Mechs were tied to each map. Like Hackmans, or Mad Cats, or Uziels? Too bad. You don't get that unless you pick one specific map always.
MA1 was better between the two for this reason alone despite sniper tanks, VTOLs and elementals being cool for the novelty factor.

MA:2 basically took the arcade features of MA:1 and +1'd it.

It was also rather fun, the fact that people still give it a whirl on XLink Kai is testament to that.

Something people seem to conflate is that a drastic deviation from a franchise is not inherently bad...it depends a lot on the specifics.
For example, while MA is obviously not anywhere close to a "true MW game" in terms of mechanics, it is at least a good game in its own right. If it wasn't associated with the BT IP then it would not get nearly as much hate as it does. Another example of a deviation that turned out good was Dawn of War 2 (people have their own preferences about stuff like base building, but almost nobody says DOW2 was a bad game).
But of course there are also plenty of **** deviations like CnC4, DOW3, or the modern Battlefront games etc.

Doesn't matter. What you need is a more accessible mech genre game to introduce the franchise to the huge legions of people who want to play mech games but do not know what Mechwarrior is.
