He can save up MC for hero mechs, and just faction hop to grab all the rank 2 mechbays, that's 14 easy mechbays (including Merc track)

Yeah that too. I think it was more his point about the initial limitation as a new player, only having 4 or whatever it is. While learning / event completing just get the 4-5 more initially from QP to get a decent start-up of FP mechs.
Then go Mechbay farming through all the ranks.
