I hope someone can help. I got my son a laptop to play MWO with because he loves it. Its a brand new razer blade stealth. It should be more than enough to play MWO. It has no other software installed. I installed the MWO Portal but when I click the 'PLAY' button the launcher minimizes and disappears. A black window "Mechwarrior Online (64bit)" pops up then vanishes, no message or dialog just disappears. I have tried the repair tool. I have tried re-installing. I have tried totally disabling windows firewall and other security settings. I have tried running as administrator. I have tried running MWOClient directly as administrator.

Is there any other debugging I can turn on to see why the client might be exiting? Any other ideas?

Thanks,

banmii.

What are the specs, especially resolution?

MWO should be trying to install at least 3 additional programs Vcredist 2010, dotnet 4.0 and dx 9c June 2010 version. Sometimes the standalone installer might bauk due to potential permission issues. Tis why some will suggest to install Steam then install MWO via Steam.

And yes, even though the game can be set to dx 9c or 11, even when set to dx11 it may use some components from last release of dx9c (June 2010 version)

I did try installing it via steam as well. Same issue, client starts up then just dies with no output. I also re-ran the dx installer from the portal. I verified that vcredist 2010 is installed. No luck. How can I make it try dx11? Thank you for trying to help.

UPDATE -

I did my best to debug in windows, lacking strace i used ProcessMonitor, it looks like it crashes after

RegOpenKey
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Rpc
NAME NOT FOUND

At least that was the last MWOClient.exe entry

Then I see WerFault.

Same issue here, for the second time already.
Pressing MWO-Launcher "Play"-Button, a black window pops up, usually it should show the login window, but does nothing, just closes after a few seconds.
First time, i tried to run the game on a new (2019) Acer Swift 5 with Geforce MX250.
Now, on a Razer Blade Stealth 2020 Model with Geforce 1650 Ti.
Same F***SH** here really pisses me off.
Tried all the stuff mentioned above, no success.
Any suggestions besides getting another new laptop?

I am having this exact issue of Razer Blade Stealth 13 Max Q. I tried steam client and standalone, to no avail. Is there a solution for this?

you may wish to contact MWo support @ technical@mwomercs.com

The 1st instant response will ask for specific info, including the following, as well as others.

[color=#444444]- A copy of the Omicron.log file from your C:\Users\"your username"\Saved Games\MechWarrior Online\Logs folder[/color]

Set shortcut properties with Admin privileges.

That has a default 3840x2160. Set your desktop resolution to 1920×1080 (this is for trouble shooting purposes)

Drill down to "C:\Users<username>\Saved Games\MechWarrior Online\Profiles\pilots name and locate attribute file then delete it. Or rename the pilot folder so anything in the actual pilot folder will be freshly created. This is important, especially if you copied files from another computer. Uninstall/reinstall MWO does not removed the files in the Saved Game Folders.

Power Options, set to High Performance
NVIDIA UI - locate Power Management mode, change it from adaptive to Max Performance (you can make a MWO profile instead of you wish).

Generate and save a dxdiag file. Scan it for mwo entries. Hoping it may show up in the error reporting section. Also scan for awesomium. It is one of the files for the launchpad.

Also review your antivirus program history for MWO or awesomium items.

Close down programs with overlays or disable overlays (Steam, TS, etc) for troubleshooting purposes.

Edit.. also, have you ensured that Windows is fully patched. And did you update to the newest Windows 10 edited version 2004, or still with the previous version? And if you did update to 2004, were you able to play MWO okay?

Just to be clear, did MWO ever run on this laptop, or is this the first time trying to run it on this system?

Windows 10!! version 2004, previously known as 20H1. The previous Windows 10 version was 1909. 2004 version was initially released in May 2020 but in increments. After sometime users were given the option to download/install it but it was not a mandatory installation at the time.

1.4.229.0 is the current version of MWO. And the appcrash does not provide any other details, and since you did not notate that an error window was generated.

Post the Omicron.log file. You can get to the saved game folder from the actual patcher. Upper left, click on the 3 Lines, under the current game options, Open Saved Game Directory. That log will be in the logs folder.

Did you try the resolution request, as well as deleting the pilot folder (or renaming it)?

No, MWO has never ran on this laptop. The computer is brand new, just got it last week. It is definitely running windows 10, and has been updated to latest version. Driver updates installed.
I have emailed support as well.

I have attempted deleting pilot folder, but because the game has never launched and I have not logged in from within, I don't
believe it has generated that folder. I have also tried the repair tool from within the portal.

Make sure your system uses the 1650 instead of the Iris video adapter, you can check that in the NVIDIA settings.

At this point, I am not able to provide any additional directions, but to cover a few things.

FondleMyGoob, since you said you were having the same results as the OP of this thread, just to confirm the following:

The Standalone Launchpad (patcher) runs but when player hits Play, to get to the log in screen with all of its bells and wishes, it does not show it, the actual log in screen crashes.

With Steam, when hitting play, the same thing, the actual log-in screen does not populate, ie crashes but neither is leaving a crash report with details.

From my omnicron log, after the 2nd Initializing AI System is the following to get to the log in screen, but before actually signing into the game. Based on the info in that log, it is loading up the game files.

<08:40:03> [Error] VOIPClient: Error opening capture device: could not open capture device (2310)
<08:40:03> [Error] VOIPClient: Error setting AGC max gain: preprocessor disabled (2304)

<08:40:10> TrackIRManager: Error initializing NPClient interface!! (Err: 4)
<08:40:10> TrackIRManager: Error registering window handle!!
<08:40:10> TrackIRManager: Error querying NaturalPoint software version!!

<08:40:26> Ammo Pool Statistics:
<08:40:26> [Error] Runaway thread
<08:40:26> System Shutdown
DXInput Shutdown
then closing of PAK files for all of the zones

hmmm... do this. Disable your microphone on your netbook, or disable sound completely (troubleshooting) I currently do not have a microphone connected to my system. There are a few other games that crash at log-in due to issues with sound drivers. Turn off sound on the system or editing a file for no sound allows the player to log in.

Of course the other issue could be the base speed of your highend ultrabook being at 1.3ghz. Yes, it turbo boosts (layman overclock) to 3+ ghz but that is not meant to be a constant speed. And based on my log file, it is also opening up all of the gaming zones before actually signing into the game.

Tarl,

Just to reiterate, when using the standalone or steam client, neither reach the MWO login screen. A black window opens then closes without providing an error message. I did disable the sound output and microphone, but that did not work.

Aidan,

I also changed over from Iris to 1650... nothing there either.

Thank you both for your help
I have reached out to support but still have yet to hear anything conclusive back from them.

I suggest re install MWO to the same location as your current installation, just so the OS is happy with MWO.
At present you could be having issues due to permissions since its a new lappy.
Reinstall should fix it, using the same location will save you some downloading.

I skimmed so if this has been mentioned...
Sorry

Also you say you use the portal?
Have you tried running the mwoclient.exe directly from the bin folder.

I just upgraded to a new system myself.
I had problems which a fresh install fixed
just saying

Until last week I was able to run and play MWO without technical problems. And I am playing it on several PCs since 2012. On this machine since June 2020.

But today I encountered the very same problem. I try to start the game, a black window shows up for maybe half a second and then it vanishes without any error message. I reinstalled the game, moved it to another hard drive, installed the prior Nvidia drivers again, nothing helps...

Any ideas on this?

+++edit+++

I found the source of my problem, it's been a joystick! I plugged it in early this evening to play Star Wars Squadrons and it caused loading problems with several games like MWO, Post Scriptum and Squadrons. As soon as I disconnected the jostick, all of the games loaded again.

Has anyone been able to figure out this problem? I'm running into the same thing. Early 2020 Razer Blade Stealth...Tried the standalone client and steam as well as everything else in this thread. Can play any other game except for this one.

Thanks.

I'm having the same issue. I also chased down whether it was a microphone or audio issue and disabled all my audio devices, but it didn't seem to work. It tricked me out. The first time I did it, it paused a long time in the black screen before crashing, but it still crashed. But afterwards, it just did the same behavior, just without launching the microphone right before crashing. Has never worked on this machine. BattleTech seems to run fine.

I'm running a days old new HP Spectre x360 13 (11th gen intel). I noticed a few folks having what sounds like similar issues with no apparent resolution on new HPs and Razers.

List of things I tried -
1. Disabling startup apps and services in msconfig & task manager - apparently another fun problem with this laptop is that you can't go into any kind of safe mode on this since it won't remember your PIN, and the biometrics are off. I've tried turning off the non-"Microsoft" services, but it didn't do anything. End result is having to reset the laptop, which sucks
2. Disabling audio devices in settings (this is where it took longer to crash, maybe irrelevant)
3. Disabling audio devices in device management
4. Running MWO installation repair
5. Running MWO installation repair with all the settings checked
6. Downloading DirectX through the MWO portal
7. Some other stuff I probably am forgetting.
