GroupQ has no population. You need to either drop in FW as a group or sync drop in quick play.

PGI could allow solos to opt into GQ so that there'd always be someone to play against and then eventually more groups could be formed. But PGI.....

The funny part is I pretty much never sync drop and haven't noticed sync dropping having any particular impact on QP. Not to mention sync dropping doesn't guarantee you play in the same game much less on the same team.

This only allows us to play against each other 1v1
If you get more friends you can do more people. Sadly mwo really isn't a good game for playing with friends. You could try making your own unit have your friends join the unit then drop in group ques.

It's an exploit to play with your friends? No wonder this game is dying...……. Never heard of that kind of crazy crap rule in any multiplayer game.
It's not. There's a small but vocal minority on the forums who view sync dropping as the devil's handiwork and cry the sky is falling whenever it's brought up. It's a thing, a thing that happens sometimes, is hard to organize and control, and doesn't have much impact on gameplay overall, particularly on the negative side. The population is also so small it's almost unavoidable for some units, and no one who matters really cares. It's fine.

Its actively done by every streamer or otherwise notable entity endorsed by PGI, so technicalities may be just technicalities.

People can group up and units can still do unit things. It's just when pgi (use to) constantly mess with game modes and adding in things like a random nuke that got exploited or "trying" to do a.i. with their horrible Escort mode which couldn't even make a non shooting atlas move down a simple path that people give up playing as a group or game mode.
2016 was the last good year to be in a unit. Game's really got to the crapper since. But hey at least they aren't adding in game mechanics no one wanted like ghost heat, selling gold mech skins at $500 per skin or a third person mode or consumables or loot box err surprise mechanics which you once had to buy with real money a key or win one in an event reward.
The community has done years of ideas and fixes for pgi. Pgi has either done a horrible implementation of "their version" or not bothered at all with the ideas. Guess no one wants to data mine eight years of player data on a forum.

Vocal minority , Please.
Just because "EVERYONE ELSE" is doing it doesn't make it right.
In fact, the notable players and units doing it are basically bullying people who DON'T do it.
