Assaults are generally better just beacuse of the tonnage, unless it something like banshee.

Well, represented in BT Banshee is horribly undergunned, and you cannot swap engines in vanilla, so...
For the rest "bigger is better" applying. Assault mech in general is cornerstone of your frontal armor and firepower, they are not effective as melee fighters. So try to get biggest loadout, with best hardpoints.
Try your hands on salvaged 'Mechs from special missions involving assaults first, any freebies is appreciated.
Awesome (energy version) is good laserboat. Stalker is good LRM boat. Highlander is jumpy assault with mixed loadout, good for long-ranged builds. Atlas and King Crab are both durable frontliners. Annihilator is almost immobile watchtower with immense firepower.

These are most useful that acessible in Battletech, Annihilator coming in DLC.
You can also look for Cyclop - he upgrading initiative, so your squad can move earlier. Very useful when you start fielding heavy setups.

As a starter warhammer 6r or 6d might be a good choice.

Something like this. Like u see i would recommed skipping the ams. But u can always ditch the 2 arm lasers in favor of ams and more armor. Perhaps since colder its an more forgiving build.

I did not put AMS on my example, but it can carry one of those too. For skills you will want all the range and heat related goodies and then structure for what you can afford.

But I am very fond of the hardpoints on the 5P for laser vomit use, even if the quirk is worse to compensate for the superior hardpoints.

Still, the Thanatos looks like a beast. I tested a loadout with 98 damage. Might buy the bundle.

Decide tue role /loadout then we can give u a hinter for the chassis with good corresponding quirks and geometry. DONT TRY TO FINDE LOADOUT FOR MECH X. WASTE OF CBILLS!
