Ok.. ready? Year is 3049 3050 and there's a Zombie Apocalypse: Which Mech or Battle Armor do you take?
Technology available from either IS or Clans, so you can have Elementals and the like...

Edit - Okay, you can make MechLab changes to TRO builds now that the game is online and we're all Mechlabbin' to our Hearts' desires.

Update - To be honest, I have fallen in love with the Swayback, so I'd use my 250-Std, EndoSteel Hunchback-4P with an ERPPC, 2ML, and a Flamer in the hunch, 2ML in the arms, and a ML in the head... with, like, 17 or so DHS. That gives me free ammo, long-range ability, 5ML for short-range, a Flamer for everything (;-), and hands.

Nova, plenty of speed and no need for ammo.

Taking a battle armor would be tantamount to suicide, because you don't have the effectively unlimited output of a nuclear reactor. You can't expect to clear out the immediate area or whole state with the limited power supply.

For utility, take a mech with two hands. For durability, take an Inner Sphere mech with many basic technologies only, and hope those are rugged enough to keep going without a proper maintenance facility. For firepower, its zombies, anything would do, but lasers would prevent ammunition problems. And lastly, a lighter weight mech would probably last longer without taking care of it due to less stress on the frame, but a heavier mech might allow you to carry a larger amount of supplies.

Therefore, examples of good stock battlemechs would be:
Brigand - LDT-1 (pirate manufacturing is best manufacturing!)
Crab - CRB-27, CRB-20 (you could cook eggs on the top of the chassis, but a focus on a few big guns is a concern.)
Dart - DRT-3S (perfect weapons for the job, but no jump jets.)
Fire Javelin - JVN-10F, JVN-11A (without the balance problems from the SRM ammunition, this could actually be neat. Stuff food in the empty ammo bays.)
Marshal - MHL-X1 (even though it has ammunition based weapons, most of them are energy.)
Mercury - MCY-99, MCY-98 (you could use that flat torso as extra seats for survivors.)
Mjolnir - MLR-B2 (a hammer, hands and super strong muscles could be very useful for building shelter.)
Phoenix Hawk - PXH-1, various (several good configurations, yet cheap.)
Rook - NH-1A, NH-1B (again, a cheap but effective all-energy mech)
Stinger - STG-3G (a bit light on the weapons, however.)
Spider - SDR-5V, SDR-5D (lack of ejection seat is only a minor issue against zombies)
Hunchback - HBK-4P (the Swayback is slow but it'll last you through the whole infestation.)
Valiant - V4-LNT-K7 (reasonably low tech for a Solaris design, you might not ever use the MASC.)
Wasp - WSP-1D (just don't burn down the town with the flamer.)
Watchman - WTC-4M (you should know the drill by now.)
Wolverine - WVR-6K

Yeah, I took a lot of free time to compile a list.

Solitaire (I'd trade the Heavy Small Laser for a flamer)

Light, Hands, All energy, Massive Punch to Weight

Stinger.

No, seriously.

They're zombies. What are they going to do, beat on your leg armor with their rotting arms? Try to bite through your diamond-steel impenetrable superstructure?

All you need is mobility to get to a spaceport so you can stomp the zombies there flat and make your way onto a DropShip and GTFO.

What you have to remember is that there will be bad people who want to take your stuff for themselves as well as the zombies. Plus if you want to get off planet, the captain of a dropship may want payment. You want something big to protect yourself and to get big loot!
I still say Berserker!

Yup, hands are very important if you want to build fortifications or haul cargo. As for zapping actual zombies, it's not too much of a concern if you're in a Mech...

...but you do still need massive firepower to "barter" for food and supplies. That's why some people might want an Atlas or other legacy assault Mech. However, I'll stick with my little Brigand since it's designed specifically for raiding in under-developed regions.
