Pilots could have a piloting skill.
Piloting skill checks could be done after certain critical hits to avoid knock down: Gyro & Hip
Piloting skill could consist of:
Pilots can transfered to other Mechs:
Pilots could have Military Ranks, higher ranks gave access to Air Strikes, UAVs, ect...
Pilots can be named.
And the most important thing:
Effects:

Piloting skill could consist of:
- chassis bonus: is improved by playing that chassis, but capped
- class bonus: improves slowly after chassis bonus is gained, is also capped
- base skill: improves very slow, but has no cap
Pilots can transfered to other Mechs:
- same chassis, but different variant: class &chassis bonus can be used
- same class, different chassis: only class bonus is used, pilot starts to get chassis bonus for new chassis
- different class: only base piloting skill is used, class & chassis bonus must earned new
Pilots could have Military Ranks, higher ranks gave access to Air Strikes, UAVs, ect...
- Some higher ranks afford to play as Lance Leader and earning points by giving out succesfull orders
- Commander needs a minimum Rank, some very high ranks can only be earned as succesfull Commander
Pilots can be named.
- Maybe a face editior can be used to create a pilots face with procedural generation & custumisation it to enhance the emotional tie to the player
- Premimum MC Cosmetics can be sold for that editor.
And the most important thing:
- Pilots can be permanet killed by Cockpit critical hit or head destruction and hurt by knockdown / head hits.
- Hurt Pilots can black out, and have to be replaced by an other pilot after the match.
- The hurt status will last some days.
Effects:
- Grinding up Pilots could replace grinding up Mechs as a game play mechanic more rooted in the Mechwarrior lore.
- Reserve Pilots must be grinded up to replace dead or hurted pilots.

I have no idea how "canon" is this proposal for MechWarrior lore:
Other online games have used this similar method,
to add a "pilot" seat for your mech, and the pilot can add unique skills to your mech!
Hech, the above is for a "white/common" pilot.
There are rare / very_rare / elite / epic levels of pilots, with better skills!
Epic pilots can even bestow skills in your mech that's not normally possible.
(Buy pilot premium package, hint hint).
eg: pilot for additional +3% cooling efficiency.
eg: pilot for additional +3% laser damage.
eg: pilot for additional +3% agility (Anchor_turn, Torso_turn).
eg: pilot for additional +3% momentum (Kinetic_burst).
eg: pilot for additional +3% artillery damage.
eg: pilot for additional +3% artillery radius.
And the list can go on and on.
***The key here is approximately +3% improvement in selected stats, so that free-to-play (F2P) players would not feel overwhelmed that they would quit.
I might just vote on this idea with my wallet!
