I'm not a pro, but here's my experience a few days ago:

Only ingame MWO game client video resolution determines MWO framerate.
Specifically, the Windows 10 "desktop resolution" does not affect MWO framerate, or at least for my computer.

1. I usually have my notebook computer with Win10 desktop resolution set to 1920x1080 (ie: 1080p).
My MWO game client video resolution was always set to 1280x720 (ie: the minimum).
Why? MWO starts to lag when I'm hit with multiple RAC and explosions.

2a. I accidentally set my Win10 desktop resolution to 3840x2160 (ie: 4k) for a few days.

2b. During those few days of "4k" Win10 computer desktop experience,
my MWO game client video resolution was again set to 1280x720 (ie: the minimum), as before.

2c. There was no noticable difference in MWO video frame rates.
ie: Only ingame MWO game client video resolution determines MWO framerate.

[Edit]
3. I also have set [Environment]=Low, and [Particles]=Low in MWO ingame [Advanced] settings for both above (1) and (2) scenarios. Did not get around to fiddle with user.cfg file(s). Perhaps during this Christmas!
[/Edit]

whats the pro's stance on resolution? i run 4k at about 60 fps with a lot of the bells and whistles turned off. but i hear recent advances in high refresh displays have done a lot for pro gaming. so what do the actual esports players think?

In mwo high fps is not as important, as in more twitch shooters. That being said, mwo tend to drop in fps quite heavily, so I would never consider 4k. But tearing/input lag are not a problem in mwo. In comp u reduce details and resolution, because of better viability.

I run mwo just fine at 4k with maxed settings at 60 fps. I had a bit of stutter and frame drops at times but those optimization scripts from MrVaad solved that and made the game better looking to boot. i5 4670k, 1080ti, 16 gigs. Definitely recommend installing it.

The game runs at the lowest resolution and detail settings at a fairly comfortable 25 - 30 fps on my budget PC from 2014. Only problem is the day/night change which pauses and stutters the game for a while. Another issue is the screen going dark and fps dropping when hit in the face by SRM or AC fire. But I imagine that is realistic. Posted Image

And if u play comp, this is not fine. I run 110 fps avg. But its not avg fps that is important, but the low, and this spikes are real (cant even solve all, since the network connection is as important.

Have you tried MrVaads optimization scripts? Took out all the stutters and frame dips for me and now it runs a rock solid 60.

One of the questions in the recent Townhall was about perfomance and feedback.

Let's see if PGI actually listens to the community, cuz I ain't spending my time on the "support" only to get "thank you, see around" treatment.

I highly recommend MrVaads scripts if you are a competitive player more interested in stable frames and clarity of view than pretty effects.

This is my modified user config to max out lod details and ensure everything is clear and completely rendered at any range and almost completely removes structure and texture pop in.

https://www.dropbox....4/user.cfg?dl=0

Game settings are this.

Effects, texturing and environment are set to very high with all others set to low with postaa enabled.

This leaves only the bare minimum of clutter to muck up your aim and vision.

Thanks for the config file. It didn't really increase my max FPS, but it prevented a lot of below 5 FPS drops in combat, especially in River City / Solaris City.

MANY thanks, I'll try MrVaads & Meep Meep's user.cfg this Christmas to see how it goes!

That's exactly what I'm looking for, (try) avoiding that serious drop in FPS during combat,
that's usually what kills my mech...

in 2016, the client ran in 32bit or in 64bit. The current version is 64bit only.

I suggest to take a look at https://mwomercs.com...editor-for-mwo/
for optimization

not related. You probably used the 32bit MWO client back then, while now only the 64bit client is in use.

So.. a Intel Xenon CPU E5450 that went live in 2007... and runs at 3ghz.... Testing/Proving Grounds likely have a higher FPS but going live there is a heavy overhead, and single core speed is where one would get the the most FPS increase. And based on the age of your system, even a more recent, low end GPU would see very little FPS increase. And the game has not had any serious optimization.. PGI doesnt even have any engineers with Cryengine experience.

Only thing you can do is to make sure all heatsinks are clear of any dust buildup and create a user.cfg https://mwomercs.com...de-and-usercfg/

Just stumble on this post, but if you're still reading this.
In any game, DirectX11 should be faster than DirectX9, it has many improvements.
