You're missing the point here. With just a handful of matches, I could swing from halfway through tier 3 to threatening to drop to 4 with just grabbing a mech out of the shop, spending 20,000,000 c-bills on building it then playing it. Playing the SAME mech over and over gets BORING. I'm good with a handful of meme and meta mechs (4 LB10 Anni, ATM VEagle, 4 AMS Corsair, UAC 5/10 BAsp, etc) and they work at keeping my PSR from falling too far. Before, I literally accidentally floated up to tier 2 off that brutal event last year to gain 75,000 match score to get a warhorn. Tier 2 was fine. I did pretty decent, but never really got more than halfway to 1. That's FINE. I'm no pro and I'm FINE with that.

Nowadays, I'm tired of hunting match score and damage and try to just have FUN playing. Which is FINE, but when I keep seeing that damn meter falling because I decided to try my hand at playing a new mech or a mech that's unskilled is quite frankly, distressing. You see tier 5 as being some punk-*** rando n00b that doesn't know which way to point the PPC (think the Federated Suns, here) and tier 4 becomes a hole you don't want to land in because you KNOW you have nearing 1,000 hours of game play in MWO, therefore dropping tiers IS a punishment and many see it that way. How many people do you know who have quit over it? Even ONE is too many in a game that needs to grow its player base to survive.

There's an option in the game settings menu to remove the PSR bar from your home screen. I'd just turn that on if it bothers you.

PSR is only there to help you get good matches. If your current PSR is matching you up against folks you have a 50/50 shot of beating in a peak meta Mech while you're running Machine Gun King Crab Go Brrrrt, you're going to have a bad time. The MM sees you're having a bad time and tries to correct itself so that you have a better time in the next match.

It's nothing personal, dude.

PSR is fine, if you play an ineffective build it should go down. PSR is not, "hey you are a good person, let's give you a participation trophy because you had the intention to win", it's "lets compare your performance to your team mates and the enemy team and rate you in relation to that".
If you play an unskilled mech accept your PSR might go down, if you play an ineffective or meme build accept it will go down. If Lebron is playing in flip flops with bricks tied to his ankles he's not going to win either and he is not going to expect that and neither will he throw a tantrum that he lost.

This is correct, PSR should rate you based on how you perform in game, not based on "if I ran meta mechs like those tryhards I would be tier w/e" ideas in peoples heads. If you run meme/unskilled/unfamiliar/terrible build mechs, the system recognizes you scores in them and tries to match you with other players who play mechs like that. Why the heck would you want to drop with your new unskilled, unfamiliar mech you're messing with into tier 1 mega meta 4 man group try hard nascar game

I'd rather have tryhards and nascar than "stare at the enemy team across the chasm in frozen city" for 15 minutes like I saw in tier 5 all. the. damn. time. At least I get to do something productive.

Fix the game modes then if there an objective beyond kill the enemy that will not happen. Right now it pretty much skirmish with objectives in most games

the PSR is totally fine, i'd say that it's even too easy to get to tier 1.

As I am almost in T1 again (active since Dec. last year again after a break), I second this notion!
I should NOT be up there where I am right now. I always felt like a good/good+-ish player, not a very good/pro one, since I am often enough (and surprisingly) positioned in the top 5 in a match.

My PSR goes up generally, down occasionally and I really could not care less. If I want to drop in "derp build" (read as: non-meta, not as: LRM-Atlas), I drop in a "derp build".

So, why do not you just stop caring about your PSR? Especially if you are playing for fun, as you said.

Simply go to your game client's setting, check the "Hide my Tier in the Front End" option, click "Save" and that is it.

Just play any 'Mech that you wish and do not care about Tiers.

In the past people have suggested PSR per-mech rather than per-player to avoid this issue, but then that might lead to other issues like good players intentionally choosing a "bad" mech to stomp n00bs with. People have also suggested MWO use some kind of BattleValue system but just like the board game that would inevitably have tons of loopholes in it to exploit.

I don't think there's really a way around it. It's the devs' responsibility to make sure all robots and guns are viable, but it's the players' responsibility to choose the right tools for the right job. That doesn't necessarily mean you have to take bleeding-edge meta builds, but it does mean you have to build around a practical, specific role and fulfill it effectively if you don't want your PSR bar to go down.

This is all assuming that you care about PSR in the first place. It's not like you get a medal or C-Bill bonus for being Tier 1. All it grants you is bragging rights, and in this game it means about as much as being the tallest kid in kindergarten.

One the games biggest weakness is well games modes encourage the worst type of play most of the time

ok, so play meta mechs and score high dmg, and you'll end up in tier 1

you can't have it both ways, you're either tryharding and getting rated as a tryhard, or having fun your own way and getting rated as other players doing that

Because being outside of tier 5 means I spend less 15-minute matches staring at the opposing team because no one wants to charge across in their 100-ton assault mechs while I'm on a medium or heavy mech (I suck at assaults. Love 'em, can't play 'em). The farther from tier 5 I am, the less likely I have those matches. I'd rather nascar and tryhards than LITERALLY WASTE time in matches like that. Tier 3 is a better balance of noob and pro. I'm far from noob and far from pro personally as a player - and I realize that.

Having a PSR system like this that will put me in with the derps who waste time like that, simply for playing an unskilled/unfamiliar mech I purchased and trying it out? That's the worst feeling ever. Try something new, get punished. Its an awful feeling that I have to "game the system" to keep away from those kinds of matches.

And just to flatly deny the "turn it off" notion: Turning off the front-end does not lock me in a tier. Turning off the front-end does not prevent me from having half the team full of cadets and being forced to stare at the enemy team in Frozen City yet again. As soon as I'd see that kind of match happening again, I'd KNOW I'd been demoted.

I've already had 4 friends (who paid actual money for things in this game) quit this game over stuff like this. I'm probably next.

It possible to play preferred fun 'Mechs outside of S-Meta scope and still land in 1st Tier. There is no need to specifically "grind" PSR with AMS or splash damage shenanigans, simply decently playing would be enough.

Most players in the MWO aren't that good.

Well, it seems to me that you can't be helped. The matchmakers does not care if you are playing for fun or as a "tryhard". If your match score is worse than the match score of the other players, it will move your PSR down. It can hardly be different: I mean, what practical solution would you suggest? Keeping a "bad" player's PSR unchanged and keeping him in its current Tier ... You can delete the matchmaker from the game altogether, then.

I know. If OP had the capability to do that they wouldn't have started this thread. Until/unless OP gets better so they can do well in the sub optimal mechs they enjoy trying out, their only options are to either play stronger mechs to increase psr (I don't know why they'd want that), or continue to see psr drops if they play mechs they clearly aren't doing well in. The system is working as intended, if you're doing badly ingame, w/e the reason, your psr should drop, and ideally put you in an environment you're doing less badly.

seriously pgi needs to hide tier in game by default, so people don't get bothered by it and just enjoy playing the game however they want

Ideally, PSR is a guide to place you in the most interesting, competitive match for your skill level — but that's all it is, in spite of being presented as a measure of experience in 2015(!) then left to sit for half a decade. If you need to focus on statistics, pick matchscore, K/D and survival rate since those are a direct reflection of how you play.

As far as 'Mech selection, FupDup said it best. There *is* a place for players who want to do it their own way, and although it's more challenging to find an offbeat build that performs well for you and the team, many of us find that trial and error the most rewarding part of the game.
