"but the new map will make it harder for LRM boats!"

That's the point.

Theatrics aside, Old polar was a borderline death sentence for anything mid-close range, and even long range direct fire mechs had trouble because of how LRM friendly it was - If you got locked onto, you were in for a world of pain until that lock cleared as there was zero hard cover to protect you. Hell, that map is probably at least 33% of the reason why I run aggressive amounts of radar derp.

Can we have a series of random drop zones, Domination placements and Capture points to give added interest nad make each drop less predictable?

Do you know that with the time you spent doing this we could have had a new map to play on instead of a remake?

How big it is? Hard to estimate it's size via screenshots. Is it as big, as old one? Or has it more reasonable size?

No. Currently we need to fix already existing maps, that are just waste of our disk spaces.

Considering that old polar was universally despised and this is basically a new map due to how drastic the changes are, then i'd say this is a net gain by a wide margin.

This change is very good for the game. Old Polar was purely long range and LRM friendly. That isn't how maps should be designed. The new design will allow ALL builds to work instead of just the long range ones. And to the people who don't think LRMs will work on this map anymore, they still will. LRMs can work on almost every map, you just need to get direct line of sight. That is where the complaints about LRMs come in the first place: people complain about indirect fire. The new map will fix the rain of death problem and give a chance for all players to have fun. Now LRM players will have to play smarter, and might have to get their own locks to succeed.

But this thread is about the new map, Yay, so lets stick to that haha

Talking about the new map VS the old is kinda regular, run of the mill feedback. Especially when many of the complaints are in favor of one VS the other, and the new map would seek to fix problems or issues with the prior map.

View PostGeneral Solo, on 18 June 2021 - 08:38 AM, said:

As for the narc comments you made, well the enemy could of made my narc mech a priority target, but thats a skillgap thing as I related to in a previous post in this thread.

I'd have to sit down and spend more time than I have to explain why being able to land a narc being a free kill in a map with no true cover, and the counter just being "well kill the narc guy it's just a difference of skill" is one of the least valid responses around, so I'll hold off.

Knowing where cover is, being able to utilize it, your enemies taking advantage of you being trapped in cover due to lrm support and using it to punish you, etc, offers more room for skilled play then an open field with a few small hills, and the occasional dip to provide minimalistic cover.

More cover means more counterplay to LRMS, ERRPCS, and the AC2 boats. The new map is still hilariously open, and looks like it will support these playstyles happily. If anything, I think they're gonna be nice and strong. however now theres counterplay in the fact that short range, fragile mechs might just be able to use their, yknow, skill, to correctly position themselves to not give said lrm/errppc/ac2 mechs such an upfront advantage all the time. Being able to play cover and movement properly is a way better room for skilled players to shine then "just shoot that guy first" (and all the reasons why that's not a perfect answer)

A single good lock being held in old polar often meant a free kill. There is a valid argument that an lrm heavy team can get punished by an aggressive, coordinated death ball pretty easy. But no insult to them, the QP guys I get stuck with often can't do that, and for that, I'm really damn happy old polar is dead. "skillgap" if you wan't to call it, gonna be a leagues better player experience for me, even when playing lrm ;)

Hit a nerve I see

Insulting a players skill and implying they're a lower skilled portion of their clan/team. Throwing out vague complaints about skillgap and using the old map as a comparison point, and then just rushing people to "talk about the new map" so you don't get blowback/counterarguments/etc is kinda not great.

Starting to see what they meant about a troll, I'll stop feeding now!

good talking.

One more map that will be a drought to play Posted Image . They're removing tatic from maps. Your programmer or map remakes is doing what a player does with an editor. It's easy and it doesn't make sense. They've already forgotten about learning the TT 1 version and TT 2 is a spectacle. The person who did HP did a great job wanted to see all the maps on that level but no!! now that MWO plus one of the F2P gets worse. then let players make maps if and for that. This no longer Battletech universe. Posted Image

Everyone, please. For the love of the Star League, please go to the training grounds to survey the map before playing on it.

THEN come to the forums and gripe about it.

*looks above* Oh, well it's already started before release. Nevermind, go about your hate and woe ;)

We'll see how this one plays... I don't have high hopes since original was the best map in game for anything that moves faster then 60kph. but since people almost always tended to play it by going to the center and dying, they will continue to do so.

So, Polar Highlands will be as bugged as Canyon Networks? Cool, more graphic glitches and false corrupted file warnings? And do you have a special affinity to lick LRM-boats around? This would be as much a lurmer-heaven as the Caustic Valleys while excluding other long range boats almost completely.
Also, have you, dear PGI, ever read those automatically generated and sent bug reports what your MWO Portal done when the game crashes? Because I hope so so you could fix them in the next patch.

And why change one of the few different maps in the pool? Okay, you have already changed one of the oldest maps in the game Canyon, making it a paradise for PPC-snipers and LRM carriers. We already have some variations of Frozen City? Add new maps, why redo what works?

This sounds like one of those 'lights are op' threads. Posted Image

I never found the old map that horrible, only occasionally being killed by lrms. Imo, there were lots of options on the old map but few takers.

Good hunting,

Okay... I just saw that update with the video, and watched it too. From how it looks to me at this time, it would appear that Francois has done quite the nice piece of redesigning. While it happens that I am most certainly looking forward to this new Polar Highlands Reborn battlefield area, it also happens that I am unfortunately depressed by the loss of the Incursion Game Mode as a playable option. It may not have worked well in the original Polar Highlands battlefield area, but I was seeing considerable promise in this new version for the Incursion kind of gameplay. I would definitely like to know what Francois's reasoning is for dumping people off the proverbial bandwagon who might have liked to play Incursion with that map. What say you about this concern, Francois? Is there any chance at all of the Incursion Game Mode being made possible on Polar Highlands Reborn in the future?!?!?

~D. V. "Polar Highlands Reborn? Looks extremely good... but, Francois, why no Incursion Mode too???" Devnull
