I just had a weird match where my Urbie got "critical damage" (if Bitchin' Betty could be trusted) almost every time I got hit before any of its structure was exposed (I had armor left in every component before and after the hit). This has happened to me before but not as much as this time. I thought you only supposed to get critical damage when you have no armor left in the component which gets hit. Am I missing something here?

i get this too on my Urbie when the CT armor is red. My guess is the Betty doesnt know the mech has armour Quirks, so when you down to just the bonus armor there she complains

Question: Does (IS) Heavy Gauss cause critical damage upon hit, even if foe is (and remains) fully armored, and without structure exposed?

From what I remember, the critical damage warning doesn't specifically have anything to do with internal damage, but just the percentage of total HP left on that location (armor + internal).

Not sure how the system handles rear location HP, but seems like it goes purely off of the armor and ignores the internal HP, since I've gotten the warning from my rear armor just being in the red (but no internal damage done).

No.

On occasion any weapon (particularly projectiles) can "backreg." So you can be surprised to receive damage to your back when facing an enemy, but this is a relatively rare (though certainly annoying) glitch.

Thanks guys, so it does sound like a Bitchin' Betty bug. At least I hope so.

i too have seen crits where ive had no open components. i chock it up to me not really understanding the crit rules very well. maybe if there is damage on one of the componetns it counts as a crit. its just another way my mech tells me: "watch out, you are taking damage." maybe a component lost some health or maybe i was do aggressive with the masc, or not poptarting well, or getting overheat damage or any of the many things that can cause direct structure damage.

I distinctly did remember watching a Baradul youtube video on a dual Heavy Gauss Fafnir, and I think I remember he said that it gives critical hits even on fully armored foes. (And I had no way of verifying this info, but kept this in mind, that's why I remembered this tidbit).

But I cannot locate this video as I've watched far too many Baradul videos about 15 months ago,
to get up to speed with MWO play.

Yeah i had it happen yesterday as well.. I put it down to two reasons.. Bad servers and latency or suspect players.. I'm guessing servers but it is Christmas, and every year at Christmas the suspect stuff seems to reappear.

It was a heavy Gauss that did it to me yesterday i remember seeing it in my death feed..

Pretty sure it is just using the actual definition of the word ‘critical’, not referring to the game mechanic. It’s just saying, ‘hey, this component (armor) is really damaged’.

If you were actually taking structure damage or losing weapons while still having armor, then you could have a real complaint.

That yellow CT internal structure is a strong indication of the overheting-induced damage

My legs would have been damaged as well, nice try. And it was right at the start of the match. i'm at 92% i had not even fired a laser.. I got hit dropped down saw the damage and screenshot it.
