So i have a couple orions:

values from https://www.mwocomp.com/patches

2xMRM 30 + AC 10

dps: 17.5
alpha 70 ish + 10 quick followup but with bad bad MRM spread
speed (with skills): ~66
range 550 (eh not really)
heat mgmt: 1.6

--------------

UAC 20 + MRM 40

dps: 15.3
alpha 80 ish
speed: 75
range ~300
heat mgmt: 1.72

--------------

4 x asrm6 + ac20

dps: 18.7
alpha: ~70 (huge pinpoint damage)
speed: 66
range ~300
heat mgmt: 1.57

---------------

Look how much the range advantage cost you in other areas. Do you think that it is fair in case of MRM and ac10 build?

Yeah I think it's fair.
I don't own any Orion's, aren't their hard points super low?
I wouldn't focus on range, I think the srm build is best.

Low points yes. not good at peeking whatsoever.

Well ofc the srm build is best.

makes me wonder if MRM are not very good and should be skipped?

i find mrms are best used with a pinpoint weapon. typical use case is sandblasting to reveal weak points and finishing them with the autocannon. mrms on their own are not really that good. thats why my iv4 has lasers and machine guns.

Agreed. I run my Dervish 6MR with 2xmrm20 + 6ml instead of just 2xmrm30. It's just more effective.

Orionwise, I like the 3rd one best. Low hard points make for a knife fighter and the quad Artemis 6 packs are darn near pinpoint.

A: Don't run Orions.

B: I really like MRMs on my Orions. They've only got one high mount and that's the LT missile. Having a big MRM there gives you something that you don't have to expose your whole self to shoot.

C: Don't run Orions.

I don't run my Orions often, but of them I prefer the VA. I have it rigged as a silly, mixed-range bait-n-switch unit. I hang to the middle of the pack, maybe 5 or so hundred meters from the enemy, and chainfire quad LRM5s. It annoys people. If they get frustrated and close with me, hey, I've also got 2xMPL and a UAC20. The build covers early game and late game just fine. The only real weakness is mid-range direct fire, but, hey, that's why you stick near friendlies.

They are pretty tanky aren't they? So why not do AC20 and snubs and not worry about speed? just run in close, twist, and blast with pinpoint damage. SRMs are not pinpoint by the way.

You tried Artemis 4’s lately? Sixes are “nearly”, nice tight spread.

Most Players I see embrace MRM instead of using an AC along with it.
If you can get the heat lower means you get a higher amount of shots away.
The AC help with builds who have energy weapons. MRM are rocket launchers with ammo bins.
A RAC would be helpful for MRM since you need something to keep them at distance.

(all) onions work really well with a big AC and SRM on them.

currently, I wouldn't bother to bring them to QP;
in faction, both on attack and defend, they're beastly if run by a team familiar with the w-key.

I love to hate Orions - I just bought two more on the current sale though.

They are quite tanky, reasonably fast and have a good mix of weapons....but their low slung weapon mounts are almost unforgiveable.

I go one of two ways with them, either massed LRM's with a minimum of tonnage on some defensive weapons (play style is to avoid direct contact at all cost and just shoot an scoot LRMs), or massed short range weapons based solely on highest possible Alpha (play style is get close and face-punch someone and while giving them no ability to move away). Neither of these play styles are super fun for me though, and I often get feast-or-famine results...I have yet to be able to really get an Orion to be a great all-arounder, due to the low weapons mounts.

I personally run 2xrotary2 and 2mrm10 on the hero Orion, the only inner sphere Orion I play.

I have tried srm builds in the past, but because of how people play in QP, it’s all or nothing, once you engage you can’t really disengage with srm if things go badly.

rotary and mrm have comparable range, and you can side peek on some maps, but more importantly it doesn’t force you in to a banzai charge if you get targeted outside your range and your team members are holding back.

Zeus's kind of have the same problem, an extremely limited hardpoint layout combined with mis-matched quirks that result in very samey builds. I have three different chassis that have almost exactly the same build.

Take the Orion-K, put 4 LPLs in the arms, stuff it full of heat sinks and laugh at the face of ghost heat - the best results orion for me.
I think I run it with STD engine, forgot already.

Orions are small assaults now after the recent quirk passes. Their problem is very bad hit boxes, which means that you will live A LOT longer if you can NOT face the enemy. Arm LPLs without arm lock allow you to aim and start lasing before the torso is facing the enemy, and the short pulse allows you to twist back without stopping the torso towards the enemy.

Orion’s left torso is a ridiculously large target. It will catch a lot of random hits, and when open, everyone will aim for it - and not miss. Therefore orion builds that can lose the LT and keep fighting have an advantage. Right side heavy builds with an STD engine can absorb damage like a 90 tonner by tempting the enemy to shoot at your expendable “shoot here” LT. I do this with Orion-M that is heavily quirked for LB20X (which means STD) and two energy hard points in the right arm for PPCs of your liking to make it right-heavy, and minimal face time.

I love the Orion P. It's just a fun little brawler. My terrible build: https://mwo.nav-alph...=09859777_ON1-P

It's just like vroom vroom, blap blap.

I run my Orions a bit different.. 1 Heavy Gauss and 4 er mediums seems to work the best for me.

Something akin to that
