I get that a lot of people look forward to christmas because its a time for them to get together with their family or otherwise loved ones and that is perfectly fine. But there are also people out there for whom christmas is a time for profound loneliness because they do not have or are far away from their family.
Its rather short sighted to just shove it into everyones face all the time.

That applies to me mate. I hate christmas, one of my sadest times of the year. But whining on a forum about it like you did?
I struggle to get out of bed each day, still coming back from a complete mental breakdown. I have a smashed spine complete with nervous shakes, just b asic day to day is a fight for me.
And you go on about trees in the mechlab? That's far more offensive than any snowy trees.

I personally thought that Krazzdaxx going out of his way to, probably for the first time ever in this game, add seasonal theming to the MechLab was quite impressive. It's the first creative use of that space I've seen, and it is VERY appreciated, not because of the decorations themselves, but because of the little extra effort that man put into his work day for us to enjoy. Hopefully it leads to future seasonal uses of that space, because it adds some lived-in feel that it's lacked since the game was released.

Here, I want to stress the point that even though I am not religious in any way, I still appreciate Krazzdaxx's work.

That said, I also know how painful the holidays can be for some people. I spent more than one Christmas, Thanksgiving, or other holiday working and away from family so that my airmen didn't have to. I know that it can be a difficult proposition to so much as decorate the workplace for the holidays as they may end up triggering sadness or depression, or even something worse, in one of your colleagues, or far worse, in your subordinates. And that's the rub we're coming up against here.

In many games, especially MMORPGs, MMORPG-lites, live service games, etc, a similar seasonal decoration in the "common areas" is quite routine. In Phantasy Star Online 2, I more often saw the common areas of the ARKS ships with either cross-promotion decorations or seasonal decorations (not just Christmas, but also Japanese holidays of various sorts). These were obligatory in the common areas, but these games also had private rooms for every player, and they were never touched, though seasonal decorations were made available. Similarly, Warframe offers seasonal themes that one can activate in their Orbiters / Landers, but these are purely optional, as were decorations for the shared semi-private space called Dojos. The common area "Relays" would sometimes be decorated, though.

So, what we're running into here is the question of "is the MechLab a private or public area within the game." I think it's fairly obvious that it's a "private player space," despite the lack of ability to decorate or interact with it really at all, other than changing mechs and walking around it at the feet of your mech.

I'm sure Klappspaten has good reason for his dislike of Christmas...most people who dislike a holiday or specific date do. What I think is necessary here is for Klappspaten to recognize that he's a customer to a *very* small team, and that this was a first time effort to add flavor to the game that has never before existed. While doing something new, it is difficult or impossible to anticipate the feelings, reactions, and triggers of all who may be impacted. Therefore, by voicing his opinion in a [preferably] civil manner, he can inform the development team of his personal needs and preferences with regards to seasonal decorations. This passes the ball to the devs to find a remedy that doesn't stifle further development, be it a simple switch in the Settings menu that allows one to turn off seasonal decorations, or possibly the expansion of the seasonal decorations to something much more interactive for the customer, perhaps even allowing for some user-defined decorations and customization of their individual MechLabs.

So, while it is unfortunate that you have such a negative reaction to the specific new thing that the devs have done, it is not unjustified. Stating your concern here to the devs is the correct thing to do, and hopefully that will lead a remedy that is satisfactory to you while not ruining the fun for the tens of thousands of other players who may like the new direction. Patience is going to be necessary, though, as PGI can only really afford one update a month, and no real hot fixes that I've ever noticed. In the mean time, the realistic only solution is to just ignore it until next month's update, when it will either go away or it will be made into an option.

PGI could have an on/off Flag that allows a person to turn off a Theme in the mechbay, or even add Themes in the mechbay like cockpit items, provided it doesnt take an engineer to add said switch/options.

Dang, just found another way to use up MC.

Listen mate. If you celebrate christmas, I hope you enjoy it.

I do not enjoy it. I want to be left alone with it and not have it pushed on me every corner I turn. But every time I express my anoyance at it someone like you comes along and tells me I should shut up about wanting to be left alone with it.

Have your consumerism fest. Just leave me the **** alone with it. Thats all I ask.
Dude, it's just trees, do you hate trees? i like the new mechlab look gives some life to it.

Consumerism? did you pay for the theme???

No mate. My issue is that I am constantly and forcefully confronted with something that causes mild to severe depression for me.

I do appreciate that PGI ain't gonna go and take it back out on account of me, and I don't expect it either.
And I do also appreciate the thought and effort behind it. Just that people today really could start to consider the fact that not everyone enjoys these things.
I just think that an off switch wouldn't have been too much to expect.

And to key on what was said earlier, I definitely think its slowing down the mech bay loading. I have a very good PC and it takes forever to drop out of a match.

im more disappointed that dev resources were wasted on this instead of fixing some long standing bugs. i know ones art and ones code but still. running a dev studio like a mod team for so long one gets sick of the "cant do anything" excuses. but we can add seasonal fluff that nobody asked for.

i was in the grocery store today, buying things that will inevitably cause an intestinal rupture and cause a slow death from peritonitis. anyway i noticed the last can of corned beef hash on the shelf. after briefly thinking that i would rather eat that on thanksgiving than turkey and all the fixings. i immediately thought of the grinch and said "whohash" out loud as i grabbed the can, with other shoppers snickering at the referene.

also if its not the boris karloff version, you're doing it wrong!

i don't think that was ever mentioned by OP... What I find offensive is that the trees aren't even pine trees let alone christmas trees we have in the cockpit a stack of christmas presents a Santlas clause statue a christmas warhorn and many other cockpit items..... why couldn't they just copy those?

Well. I'll add my 2 cents to the pile of people complaining about loading times here, since I didn't find a topic about that Posted Image

Decorations are nice and all, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut x2 or sometimes x3+ time to load the bay is extremely infuriating. Not like the old load times were not annoying, but I could live with like 30-ish second of loading. Now I can browse a couple of forum topics while loading.
Not to mention that before the patch I was usually among the first people to load into the match, but now I'm lucky if I'm not the last of all 24 to load lol. Something went real wrong here.
