Does it make any sense to put all my heat sinks on one side of a mech, planning for the loss of one side torso?

Only if you are sure you can use the dead side to take damage and go first. Otherwise its wiser to spread them out including the ct and head.

That's the part that I don't understand...
So are DHS (Double Heat Sink) only slightly better than SHS (Single Heat Sink) now?

My Stone Rhino SR-6(S) stuffed with SHS was not noticeably better for heat disspation with SHS...
it had 20+ SHS and also 4 SHS in the Engine as well...

you must insert them in the side with most weapons

and have all weapons on one side is usually bad idea, except some brawl IS orions

Yes, at some point on clan mechs with lots of tonnage and free space, massed single heatsinks will outperform doubles, especially since singles add significantly more heatcap.
