Personally, previous games did have it where a mech exploding did damage to another mech, so I do think there should be some kind of effect, especially if really close or touching.
As for the whole assault vs light argument, lights like fleas do alot of face hugging, and assaults are just slow, that is part of the nature of it, but it still comes down to skill in the end, one tasty shot to a light will severely wound it most of the time, and some assaults do have fair speed so it isn't too slow.
As for short range weapons, flamers really should be in yet another range of weapons...super short...I know alot of players hate them, and that has alot to do with them not being done right, originally they did 0.7 damage but never added heat, then they changed it and it was too much heat, then came the exponential heat gen nerf, and then the hsl nerf. Add the 90m range, and they are really annoying to use, even though I love using them, and as some one who actually uses them, they really need to raise damage to at least back to 0.3, and maybe at least get to 100 m of range, and that is just to be balanced with clan flamers, IS would need even more help.
