ever consider an 8v8 fp event? i was curious how a smaller team size would work out in that mode.
i view 8v8 as an inevitable necessity at some point. like if pop ever drops below 12k. what killed fp for me was not the difficulty or the groups, it was the wait times. id hate to see wait times north of 10 minutes in qp, because when im spending more time waiting than playing i usually go play something else.

Pretty sure PGI will take the "data" from this and say, "No, see? We were right all along. Groups and Solo play well together in 12v12 only! Making 8v8 with a group of 3 won't matter 'cause 8v8 doesn't work AT ALL!"
*sigh*

Being against this event in QP; but, recognizing that players have a demand for a smaller 8v8 or 4v4 intimate dynamics (I am occasionally one of them), I can say 1 word = Options.
-
Everyone is protesting everything in Chicago next week. When I am there, I might find time to protest this, as well.
*Hope people will keep it peaceful. Prob not though... Wish me luck.

Options..OPTIONS? You think PGI is going to give us OPTIONS?
Those clods TOOK AWAY our option to choose our maps AND game modes and stuck us with this garbage voting system, and now we don't even get to choose whether we play 8v8 or 12v12 in quick-play. Some BS. I hate it. Period. Been here since closed-beta and this makes me want to uninstall.

1. they are not a team player
2. generally are those people not sharing armour, and hide behind to do some damage.
if in 12v12 you can really hide your lack of skill or team play, here it is much harder. just a skill issue...
You act like people can force their teammates to use comms and coordination. I've had far too many teams tonight that did not. Every afk or dc is also extremely punishing as well. Love 8v8 when its coordinated, but there's way too much room for error here. The tonnage balance is also extremely out of whack.

I have ran across some organized groups.
Ran into a missile boat group, unfortunately our group just couldn't stomach running head long into 4 missile boats so we lost that round. All we had to do was run straight at them, but nope the cats ran every where but at the guys that can't shoot anything close to them. Guess they wanted to fight in the shade.
Had a group of lights on my side, that was really rewarding... it was a loss if you didn't pick up what I was putting down.
Had some other groups that tried to herd the pugs against other 4 mans too. That didn't go so well. But then there was plenty of times I had a group on my side and it helped. They weren't always top damage dealers, so there's that.
8 targets and I still managed games with 1k damage, so I don't think 8v8 is as broken as people think.
Match maker, or perhaps groups should just be limited to 1 assault, 1 heavy and then either 2 mediums or 2 lights. Make that group make decisions on who's gonna pilot what. I think we had something like this back in beta but I could be wrong.

I feel your tune would be quite different if PGI didn't make this change on a whim and instead took better care at tweaking matchmaker to check for tonnage balance and group restrictions.
Oh most definitely. But that's not what they did and this is the current state of the game that I'm commentating on. I would have loved a different approach to this from pgi and if done right it probably would have encouraged me to try out a more cooperative game mode. but as it stands I just don't really want to play the game until 12v12 is back. It sucks to suck for me but I'm no expert at the game. I play the game after work and on weekends to have a fun time and mess around in unga bunga big stompy metal thing or be a little goblin in a light mech stealing all your left socks and 8v8 just makes it so much harder to do lolol

It´s astonishing how different the experince in MWO can be. I can only assume that people who like the current experience are playing in groups only. Telling solo players that everything is fine ist just selfish.
The most annoying thing about QP is something that has been asked to change for several years now. Selecting a mech and dropping on a random map is just bad. Let us select the mech after the map. Or, even better, let us select the mech and the maps we want to play. And match the players on the map that was selected the most. I don´t want to play a brawler on Alpine and i dont want to play a sniper on Solaris City.
Getting rid of this four map selection system would be a huge change for a better experience for everybody. The simple reason why i enjoy EQ. I know the map and can prepare my mech for it. Isn´t that the main reason why we enjoy Battletech/Mechwarrior? Being able to adapt your mech to the situation!?

The Mech selection issue has been on my mind for a while. My suggestion would be a kind of "drop deck" for QP, 3-4 slots for Mechs of the same weight class (+/- 5t) from which you can choose your Mech after selecting the card.

I mean, I play 90% of my games solo, I still prefer 8v8. So what you're saying is definitely not true, it's just your perspective as you try to find someone or something to blame.
Kinda agree on the mech select though, it always feels bad to have a non-sniper mech and get dropped on freakin alpine as an example. But I highly doubt a change like that is even possible for PGI at the moment. More a MWO-2 type feature, which I hope will happen one day.

We’ll have to see. The event queue system has its drawbacks as well. It’s interesting because while this forum thread is mostly against 8v8, but almost every community discord server I’m in is generally for 8v8. I’d say there are probably more people on all of those servers than we see active on the forums. I don’t think I’ve seen feedback this ranged in a long time.
I don’t have sole control over the game, I had to run this event through the team like I do everything else I do for MWO. Since I’m primarily an artist and mech designer, I don’t even have the keys to start this event. Someone else had to do it for me
I play lots of MWO, probably too much for my own good lol. I test things in quick play a lot, mostly new content/mechs or stuff we’re currently looking at for balance patches. I’m also a very active competitive player, used to play for ABIN and now I’m on KDCM. My activity has gone down a bit recently due to also working on Clans as well and that taking up a lot of my time, but I always make sure to make room for MWO. No matter how much is on my plate, I will always make time for MWO to keep trying to enrich it for its players.
It was honestly super nice to be able to do some 8v8 yesterday. I haven't had a lot of spare time for much of any gaming of late, and this little event was a lovely throwback to a time when MWO was more engaging, more tactical, and a whole lot less about two oversized clumps of metal trying to hog the catbox.
Don't pay too much attention to the whinging. Like yeah, fix the mistakes made with the event for next time, but not everybody on the forums thinks reduced team size games is a gibbering disaster.

THIS ONLY LASTS UNTIL THE 20th and then the game goes back to normal. All of these, "I'm going to uninstall because you ruined the game" posts are a bit crazy to me.
Some stomps will happen from time to time, but I've been on both sides of that. Overall the matches have still be enjoyable, just shifting play style a little bit and keeping closer to team mates helps a lot.

Next, after reading that whole thread I wonder where all the disgust and aversion towards higher PSR players stems from? Most of them are really friendly and extremely helpful. After asking him nicely, the Italian Diregod even took me into some 1v1 lobbies, trying (and partially succeeding) to improve my mechanics, e.g. stopping me from overtwisting and such. I can always pm MPG, Weaponmaster and so many more and ask for a little advice when I struggle with anything game-related and I always get an answer or their opinion. All of them are (ex-)cauldronies and compies through and through - but each and everyone will help you if you ask them nicely, telling them you want to improve your gameplay.
Furthermore if you're Tier 4 or 5 you don't even ever have to play them, neither in 12v12, nor in 8v8. Hell, even I as a T1 don't get to fight with or against many compies, because a lot of them play and prac in private lobbies so they don't have to deal with the 12v12 chaos and the skillgap issue of T1 pepegas like me.
Even if you play for fun and play non-meta builds, sure you do you it's your leisure time and you earned that, but don't say the game is not competitive. Quick play - for good or bad - has a ranking system, thus bringing in a competitive factor into it by itself. Our playerbase is just too small for seperated ranked and non-ranked queues. I think nobody blames any lower tier player to bring whatever they like into their matches but once you go up in tiers, you have to understand that you're a big setback for the rest of the team, weighing down the other 11 (or currently 7) team mates if you play weird mech builds.
B2T:
My experience in 8v8 was great, both playing solo and in groups. Sure, some balancing is needed, but Tiy0s already said he'll try to take care of that in the next try.
A big positive was the more than notable increase in voiceIP communication, I had games flooding with game relevant information like never before, calling out and focussing down exposed targets, PUG lights and mediums hurrying back to get those pesky two PIRs away from my assault when asking for help. Communication is key in multiplayer games and people seem to be less shy with only 7 other guys (and girls) on their team.
Increase in game performance - I personally had 250ish FPS in 12v12 but several of my friends run MWO on very old machines and the increase in FPS was very noticable for them.
Way better overview of what is happening in the game, it's easier to come up with some crossfire or flanking positions. As someone mentioned before, 33% less blue blobs on the minimap also helps me quite a bit, making it less cluttered.
It's more forgiving to peek the wrong corner - as long as you don't peek it twice, duh.
I can only speak for myself, but the game feels way better for me in an 8v8 environment. On a personal sidenote, I even switched around some real life chores and duties this week so I can play this mode for as long as it's available.
---
TLDR:
Thank you Tiy0s.
Be nice and understanding to each others mindsets, no matter if casual or compie.
8v8 is great in my opinion for above mentioned reasons.
