Most annoying gamemode ever. Whichever team loses the first mech loses the match in 90% of the matches.
So boring.

I think the 8 v 8 match needs to be fixed a bit more.
When 8 v 8 starts at alpine peak, I start sighing lol

the biggest downside is that in 8 v 8 don't really have to think about mech builds... Honestly, i can play with just a strong brawler like Orion-va and still win most of the time.

pace of the game is definitely better, but I feel like I have more to lose :-0

In any case, I'm rooting for MWO to take a better direction :)

Just an observation on 8v8 over the last few days:

It's too easy for a mediocre 3-4 man to overwhelm the opposition. We are not very good, but we have been winning far more than normal even as just a 3 man when we use our tonnage. I really think that in the future limiting groups to 3 will not be enough. I think there has to be additional weight limitations. Just my 2 cents.

If a mediocre 3-4 man is overwhelming the opposition, then the opposition is even less than mediocre. That's working as intended.

you know i honestly never understood why PGI continues to insist on trying to make MWO some big E-Sports thing (to be completely honest i have never understood e-sports in general then again i don't even follow regular sports.). especially now with the player base so low. MWO is far to niche a game to really take off for such a thing anyway. this could be my old man brain talking though. hell i feel the same for TT tournaments. the effort they put into trying to make this something its not could be better spent on some damn Advertising. (seriously when i am in a Discord chat and mention the game hardly anyone even knows what i am talking about. no wonder the population is so low, toss some cash at some general gaming youtubers like all those crappy mobile games do. perhaps offer some kind of code that will give a new player a free hero mech or something) thats a whole other issue though

If you are a tactical PvP shooter (remember, this game was billed even in the early days as a "thinking man's shooter") what do you suggest they promote as an endgame?

CW/FW/FP was doomed from the start as they aren't a AAA developer and persistent universes that are actually engaging are notoriously hard (EvE being probably the best example of it, and it was troll heaven for numerous years).

This game has never been like Battlefield where chaos reigns in matches and effectively is like a party game, nor could the engine handle that sort of thing.

They could double down on trying to make this more of a sim, but I feel like most of the people who wanted this to be a sim already left for MW5 long ago....

Tossing some money at youtubers isn't a fullproof plan, after all they already tried that with MW5.

After reading through the recent posts, I feel like a summation would be nice and I'm going to do (at the risk of seeming like I'm straw-manning their posts) :-

1. The word "Comp" was used in the description of the main post and hence the misconception of this 8vs8 being a compie mode has emerged.

My reply :- 8vs8 isn't a compie mode. It's just quick play with good performance and less waiting before matches.

2. Some people want to use any kind of "support" build or any build and not worry about the consequences of said builds to their teammates. They want to do "whatever" they want in the match and not feel like they were responsible for the bad outcome that occurs.

My reply :- I get that some people learned how to fight from a box of kittens but no one's stopping you from playing your build. If you feel bad about your actions, THEN STOP DOING IT! Thanks. It's one thing to make mistakes and get killed like a dumdum (believe me, I've done that more times than I care to count) but purposely sabotaging yourself and your teammates, feeling bad about it and STILL WANTING TO DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN means you need help of some sort.

3. Some people like the "chaos" of a 12vs12 battle (?)

My reply :- Well, I don't. So.... Posted Image

4. The maps are too big for 8vs8

My reply :- No, they are not. How many times have you guys used EVERY BIT OF A MAP? Every match plays the same way. Either go left and set up a firing line or NASCAR like crazy. The snipers take up the same spot on the same map every time and the rest of the fight happens in the same spot on the same map every time. Oh, let's not forget some guy pretending that he's Boris in a Sad Cat, failing miserably at it and prolonging the match unnecessarily. Sorry but if you're not Boris, don't be Boris.

5. The event succccckckkakskskaks. We hates it, we hates eet!. Stooopeed developerses (Ok, I admit for this part I couldn't resist Gollum Posted Image )

My reply :- Guys, seriously, please consider how this 8vs8 was deployed. No tonnage balance, 3-man groups are actually 4-man groups, matchmaker overflowing with nonsense, etc., Consider the following :-

(A) The tonnage was properly balanced

(B ) The groups limited strictly to a 2-man with a high Min and low Max tonnage as well as only one group per team

(C) Matchmaker properly assigning ELO equally among both teams

(D) Groups being matched against groups as a priority

Can you honestly tell me that if A-to-D was properly implemented, 8vs8 wouldn't be fun?

FP is the closest thing to an "End Game" MWO has in my opinion (not that i ever played FP much). oh there is apparently a leaderboard not that i have ever cared about such things. instead of pushing Solaris (now that was truly dead on arrival) they could have put that money into making FP workable as a sort of end game (not that i am against a 1v1 or 2v2 game mode just that it never really worked). that though is hindsight and we all know about hindsight. MWO is a shooter, yes a slower paced one that requires more thought than any CoD style game but still a PvP shooter. not much depth there to begin with. get better get to higher tiers rinse repeat like any other PvP shooter the same as every multiplayer game. (mind you i have always found that the lower tiers were far more fun with T3 having a nice balance. to bad the population is so low that you can find t1 players in t5 games from time to time.). there is no story, nothing to really work towards other than whatever personal goals you set or the age old Pokemech collection. for me the enjoyment is not in pushing and pushing to be at the top (something i will never be) but in simply having fun and trying new or interesting builds tweaking those i have and generally just enjoying myself. i am a casual gamer when a game is no longer fun i leave. hell i enjoy just chatting about whatever build i am currently trying with the few people i know who even know the game exists. i even stream it on Discord from time to time to get others to try it out. as much i criticize PGI i do love MWO and the Battletech universe in general (mostly its the universe as HBS: Battletech is right up there with Knights of the Old Republic 2 as one of my all time favorite games). MWO is the only PvP game i play these days but it has slowly become something i only come back to for the odd event and then only if there is something i want being offered.

take another slower paced shooter i used to play, War Thunder, land battles were rather fun up until i got to the higher tier more modern stuff then it stopped being fun so i left the game. same for WoT and even Crossout (ok that one was killed when it left beta and the grind became impossible but the point still stands)

hell i am one of those that left MWO for MW5 but every time i go back to playing that game they do some update that has me having to wait months for the Mods to be updated so it is playable again. (sadly MW5 needs to be heavily modded to be fun but that is something one can do with a single player game that you can't really with a PvP one). it is also very unlikely that i will get MW5 Clans for this very reason.

again though i am getting on a tangent. its more a debate for another thread.

I do not notice faster times for quickplay, it is same 1-2 minutes like before. I think it can be faster, but not because it is 8v8 but because game does not care about mechs and throws everyone into battle, all those 50% assault mech population that waits 20 minutes for quickplay, now gets into game at once and it is 8 assaults on both sides. maybe those things are more visible now and your inability to help the team actually matters. I doubt people suddenly became toxic towards you for nothing. I have played all these days and did not see more toxicity than before...on the contrary, more people were willing to lead/collaborate/play as a team. reflect on it...

We all care about the game, ........
If 8v8 is going to be the norm in the future I'm just going to have to adjust to be able to play it properly if I want to continue playing. I'm sure I'll be able to find some fun in a new play style or find a way to make my current favorite light mech builds still be viable within the tighter limitations of a smaller match size. I just hope that 12v12 continues to be an option (which it will be once the 21st rolls around but I'm talking about far in the future if the game isn't shut down yet)

this is the attitude everyone should have. and i would be for 12v12 to stay as long as they bring back at least 6 man groups and make units relevant again.

totally inaccurate. we won being 2 mechs down, we lost with 4 mechs advantage. you just try to throw a stone with no reason except you losing some games...

exactly true. i have said the same many times, this is a niche game but it tries to mimic other games for the money ??...instead of actually going more niche and offering something unique. maybe less players but more dedicated, willing to spend more, also remember most of the fan base are now adults with money in their pockets...but who we are to judge pgi business acumen ? :)))))))))))))))))))

if 2 people play 10 games together and one loses 90% them, how many the other one wins? it was an oversimplification of the statement...but you can go into details if you feel the need.

I already said - this mode proved some things inherently wrong already, that could be fixed to improve the experience. clearly not in the way it was deployed now, but at least we have some info. and i hope PGi continues to work on this and maybe they manage to bring more fun in the game.

Perhaps.

It would depend on who is spending the most money on the game, it might not necessarily be the most talented, and/or dedicated, maybe some folks just like to drive mechs around and aren't concerned about their performance.

Of course we'll never know either way.

Good hunting,

So boring.

How is that different than 12v12? Unless it's a Light that screwed up its positioning, the first 'mech lost is a good predictor of the losing team.

Incorrect, actually. A premade lance presumably has internal communication, personal familiarity with each other, and at least loosely coordinated builds. They can be exactly the same skill as their opposition and still have an outsized effect on the battlefield. The ability to field half the team in one premade is one drawback to 8v8; it could be solved by limiting groups to 2 or 3 players, but then you get pushback because people want to play with their friends, and those friend groups are based on 4-mans. It's a dilemma for PGI.
