I have started playing Faction Play and intend to play it occasionally as a break from the standard quick matches. Currently, I just look at what battle is happening and pick a side. However, I have noticed that pledging loyalty gives better rewards than being just a mercenary.

If I pick a Clan faction will I:
1. Still be able to pick either side (IS/Clan) in the current battle or will I always have to pick the clan side?.
2. Still be able to play in any current battle whenever I look at Faction Play, or will I have to wait for battles that my clan is fighting?
3. Be able to break this pledge or is it permanent?

Thanks

1/ you'll have to fight on the clan side
2/ the particular clan or house does not matter, it's clan vs IS
3/ you can break your affiliation at any time without any penalty, just select a new faction

You can pledge loyalty to any faction (Inner Sphere / Clan) and sub-faction (Free Worlds League / Clan Diamond Shark / Draconis Combine / etc.). It really makes no difference except for earning factional rewards.

The only thing that matters is that any sub-faction (Clan Wolf / Clan Ghost Bear / Clan Steel Viper / etc.) can fight battles on behalf of its respective faction (Clan). Ditto for the Inner Sphere - any IS sub-faction (FWL / LC / FedSuns / etc.) simply fights for the Inner Sphere in the Faction Play conflict.

As for breaking the pledge, you can do it at any moment - every two minutes, if you wish. Then you can pledge new loyalty to any faction (IS / Clan) and any sub-faction.

Use that big button to break the pledge and then pledge your loyalty to any other Clan or IS faction you wish.

Yes, you can break your Loyalty affiliation at any time without any penalty, just select a new faction...

(There is no more penalty for changing Loyalty; if you search for older MWO postings, it might mention of such a penalty...
But now, there is no more penalty for changing Loyalty).

Thanks everyone who replied to my question.

However, I have noticed although I have played three games as Freelancer and Clan I have not made any progress in the mercenary bar or any other bar. I guess this is because I am not in a unit?

To fix this, I am thinking of creating a new unit for myself. I don't want to be anti social but I can't commit the time to train with a unit and play with it whenever they need me. That would be unfair on the other players and worse potentially leave them a man down. By creating my own one man unit, I can play when I have time and not let other players down by being unavailable when they need me.

Sorry if this a noob question but I am new to Faction Play.

You don't need to be in a unit in order to unlock rewards. I don't know why you don't see rank progress - are you sure you're looking at the right place?

PS: there are multiple kind of units, and they differ vastly in matter of commitment required. Actually, as far as I know, only competitive teams require some commitment during leagues ; if you join a casual unit in order to sometimes play in group nobody will be mad at you because you're only there once a month.

Thanks for your reply.

FYI I click the Faction Play button and then in the left hand menu I click the Faction Reputation option. This opens a list of the IS and Clan factions and at the bottom is Mercenary. All the progress bars, including Mercenary rank 1 are on zero. Each rank shows what you get, for example Mercenary rank 1 says you get 75.000 CB and mech bay.
