I didn't get the Steam-tied games through Steam. They simply integrated a hook into that game that checks/logs into Steam at game start. If it doesn't get back the reply from Steam, it just doesn't start. Yes, I cannot play "single player in offline mode" because Steam being down prevents the game from functioning at all. For a game I bought conventionally in a shop. Hurray for full Steam integration! :o

Not sure if it actually has data stored on some Steam server or not. And I'm not bothering to spend hours over hours in an eventually futile attempt to bypass that. It is just annoying as hell. ^_^

What game? You mentioned Shogun 2. I tried my copy to make sure there wasn't something unique about the game. I load up Steam, go into offline mode (steam restarts), then pulled up the game without any problems.

Now, if your complaint is that you can't load the game without loading Steam, I can't help that.

Global Agenda

http://www.google.co...PWaGsXuO2EjfZEg

Global Agenda is a free to play game that existed on its own *BEFORE STEAM* and has ITS OWN SERVERS, on top of that, IT DOES NOT REQUIRE STEAM TO DOWNLOAD, PLAY, OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH THE GAME.

It appeared on Steam late last year with a hand full of other F2P games. If you have steam, you can go ahead and download it for a whopping purchase of 0.00 currency of your choice and you can play it through steam. Or, if you don’t want to play an online game through steam, you can go to global agenda's home page and just download their client without steam.

ALL YOUR ARGUMENTS ARE INVALID.

You should get your facts straight. Global Agenda was run in Beta using Steam and has allways been avialble throuth Steam. It was only after HiRez Studios decided to go free to play that they offered the client for download on thier site as well (and are looking at creating thier own "steam app" in the form of Hi Command, an idea which is proboly going to be scrapped and they will return to Steam)

Steam is a content delivery system that was designed to have unobtrusive DRM in order to comete with software piracy. And it works. http://www.escapistm...Service-Problem

Also consider the number of indie titles Steam offers, giving smaller devellopment studios the higer exposure.

How is any of this a bad thing?

I personally love steam. Im not a huge fan of onlive gaming in general unless there is a cooperative aspect involved (Left 4 Dead anyone?). Yes, Steam is a form of DRM but they do not treat their customers as though they were criminals... *cough*Ubisoft*cough*...
