The Wolfhound, Hussar and Commando are all pretty good choices. For battle armor that is.

For Clan mechs, the Kit Fox, and my personal most fave, the Solitaire. hard to argue with a 25 ton mech that carries a heavy large laser, two heavy medium lasers and a heavy small laser and is ridiculously fast and well armored for its size. As for IS mechs, i've always liked the Stiletto, Firestarter, Hammer, and of course the Wolfhound, and the Spector, now that someone else's mentioned it

With the timeline being 3049, the only ones we'll be likely to see are the Firestarter and Wolfhound, maybe the Kitfox when the clans invade.

If we're saying any tech level, its the Mongose. Good speed, decent firepower, and advanced sensors. The truest expression of a scout mech out there.

At this time - Mongoose 66b or Ostscout OTT-7b, Clan - Arctic Cheetah, Jihad time - malak or revenant.
However, the best scout is "Omega" by WoB

The Locust always had a special place in my heart, it was the first BattleTech mech I had when I first started playing...

As for my style, probably the Panther as I always liked the "force recon" heavy hitter type scout.

Have to say the Puma. It can be rough when you are stuck in with a punch of poptarting heavy/assault mechs.. But in a well rounded match? I love the good speed, strong firepower, and low profile.

If we are talking IS only mechs... Hmm. Wolfhound.
