Thank you, mate! Those Dragons are excellent. Effects of smoke, flash and recoil are just f... awesome, you breath life into those static pictures! How did you do that? I can confess, that I'd tried to repaint your Hunchback, hoping to add autocannon flash light effects using GIMP, but with no luck at my side(

Thanks. In answer to your questions, the effects are done using glow, layer over layer (blur a copy of your white laser or AC flash, put in underneath the first one, color it and blur it for desired glow effects) and a pressure sensitive tablet from Wacom. The latter ain't cheap but it really makes a difference when you want to get subtle. No matter what, you need to spend time trying, throwing away layers when it's crap, re-doing and tweaking... Good luck!

Anyone wanna take a crack at doing the same and other mechs? =D I'd love to see multiple people's takes on the color scheme on each mech. I like how this Catapult was done, but I'm interested in what others come up with as well.

Mautty, these things take time. While I can do exceptions on unique characters such as Yen Lo Wang, or Garth's 'calls for contest work', I will avoid re-doing repaints from others or myself. Because there are few of us and so many factions and units to paint (times multiple new Mech concepts that come out), it's only fair to every one if we try to do as many as possible. Diversity for the community so to speak. I also try not to do clan for now as I believe the priority will be IS for the first months of the game.

That being said, this insignia is one of the coolest ones I've seen so I understand why you love it.

Regards,

I was hoping I could make a request for a Snord's Irregulars catapult, or centurion. They do not have an official cool scheme, but their battlemechs are normally a bit run done and always wear a buffalo quarter.

EDIT: Another Dragon, again Capellan (I know the Dragon is Kuritan), with the scheme of House Dai Da Chi. Not an easy one to do. I am still not satisfied with the result of 'golden green' paint effect.

I can't take so much awesomness in a single post. It is beautiful. Makes me really want to buy one of those when Kuritans visit us next time (partly because Dragon was lorewise meant as a replacement for Shadow Hawk, my favorite mech which will probably stay out of this game :) ).

So I have a question for GIMP users. How do you add the Unit Insignias? Any You Tube tutorials or webpages are appreciated.

Regards,

I meant no offense nor pressure and I definitely did not mean to sound like I was pestering anyone. I simply wanted to open doing a scheme for the insignia to any of the other people in here and let them know I wasn't limiting the recolors to just one person if they wanted to take a hand at it.

As for the Insignia, while it may look clan it is actually going to be an IS Merc unit called The Hunting Pack. It will consist of mostly medium lances, the command and a couple others will be Heavy lances and there will be several light lances or lights mixed into medium lances for scouting/light support.

Also, besides the original 'guide' in here posted about using GIMP for the recolors, has anyone found a 100% effective way to do it? Maybe I'm missing a setting in GIMP or something but my recoloring 'tints' the mechs exterior, so if its red and I try recoloring blue, it'll make it purple, or if its grey and I try making it a vibrant red, it will dull the red and wash it out. I keep trying to mech with it to figure something out, but no luck so far...

Mautty, no worries. I was just stating my personal opinion on multiple repaints and explain why I won't do it (unless it's an accidental case of 2 of us working on one at the same time). Interesting that you shed some light on The Hunting Pack. It did have a clan look to me. Nonetheless I will say it again, it is one of the most professional looking and awesome insignia I have ever seen.

This is amazing.. the best one yet. I love the subtle touches (like the danger logo)..

Now finish the Urbie :) Love the sketch.

Thanks for your feedback. As for Urbie, I am working on it.

Thanks. Agreed on Kuritan origin. That is why the second Dragon in that post is a Combine Mech. (not sure I nailed the red color though). After that I was more toying around.

] I have had a go at the RTG - I pulled your logo off your website. I thought that the Hunchback was best for the same head scheme as the Uziel miniture. Posted Image

Thanks for that! I have to agree with the criticisms, though. The lower leg emblem needs to be rotated and the orange square needs to be either blended or added somewhere else. If it helps, the projection in the Uziel's torso is actually it's cockpit, and what you would expect to be the cockpit is actually a weapons pod.

I'm a GIMP user, and still learning myself, so my way is probably not the best or most efficient way to work.

But, how I've been adding insignia and decals so far is by starting with an image of the insignia in .psd or .png format with a transparent background, then copy and paste the insignia onto the 'mech image with the "Multi White" layer selected. It'll appear as "New Layer (Floating Selection)" in the layers dialog on the right. Then right-click the new floating layer in the 'mech image, select "layer", then select "Scale Layer" and resize the insignia until it fits where I want to place it. Then use the perspective tool from the toolbox on the left to change the perspective of the insignia until it fits the perspective of where I want to put it. For example, if I want to place the insignia on the 'mech's shoulder, but the shoulder is tilted at an angle, I'll need to use the perspective tool to pull at the insignia's corners until it matches the angle of the 'mech's shoulder. Then when I have the insignia where I want it, I right-click the insignia, select Layer, then select "Anchor Layer". And that pastes the insignia onto the 'mech. If it doesn't look right, ctrl+Z will undo the paste and let me move it around some more.

Hope that helps, and I hope I wrote everything coherently. Like I said, I'm still learning myself.

The Insignia is courtesy of GleamingScythe via DeviantArt. I contacted him about using it as a custom, player-made mercenary unit for MechWarrior and he said that I could as long as it was not a commercial usage of it. So, all credits for the emblem go to him, he actually created it for use in a fictional world he made and is the insignia of a group called the SageCorps.

I love the one where the Catapult is painted grey and has the Grey Death Legion symbol painted on the side of the torso and on the leg. I just made it my desktop. GDL FTW!

excellent work

Thank you FD! Not that much credit except just a couple of ideas here and there. I admire your art so it was a treat to try to do it 'a la' you as per Garth's request. I am refining the lines and adding texture in hopes to finish it this week in my spare time.

Nice to see you drop by this thread by the way. Keep the excellent 'Mechs coming and we'll paint them up for you!

Work in progress..........I still need to figure out how to blend/shade the areas where the old Unit Insignias were and I am in the process of attempting to add my own Unit Insignias.

FOR THE EMPRAH! SPHESS MARINES ADVANCE!

If anyone is looking for an idea, Id really love to see a Robinson Rangers Centurion, perhaps in battlefield neutral/desert camo rather than parade ground colours, perhaps with the shield painted to be like the shield that is the emblem of the rangers.....
