Hey everyone,

Just wondering how unit assignments were going to work. I would prefer to be in the 5th Sword of Light. The Sorenson's Sabres add on book was a favorite as a kid. Any ideas of how this will be handled in the game world? Will the game allow for unit specific graphical identification or paint jobs?

Still largely unclear. The dev team has stated that with rank and XP, a player can "join" elite/special units, but what exactly this means has not been made clear yet.

I wonder if we will have the ability to appoint a command structure that will be active within the game universe. It would be nice if they were able to make command level tactical decisions as far as where and when to attack.

I'd like to see how a well organized lance of Dragons will do.

Having read a bit on these forums, it is clear that this is a SUPER ambitious project that they are trying to get out as soon as possible. Hopefully they will accurately portray the houses and correct command structure of each. There are definately a lot of questions that will be answered and finding out what unit you're going to be in would be one of them. I've been out of the loop for some time now since my days of spending hours a day on MPBT Solaris, so if I could become a lance commander, I would be happy with that. This was my favorite game franchise as a kid, but now a wife and 2 jobs later, it's more difficult to dedicate time.

Just as a point of info, they've stated that Rank (gained through Loyalty Points) within a faction will give you no leadership over other players. It is just a way to unlock "special" units to join and get new skins for mechs and such.

I have faith that PGI will do a great job in this aspect and make us happy. I especially say this because I see them actually posting and talking with and caring for their player community and what we want...

I never understood the fascination with wanting to be in one of the elite canon regiments. Being in a Sword of Light, or Otomo or Ryuken regiment will not make you a better player. Just find a group of people you enjoy playing with, and the rest will come.

I got faith in them too ... but I Can see this being an issue for Lone wolves and any one else that does not want a "House" ... Still ... I suppose that could be fun too

I've never been under the impression that it will make me an Elite player in this game, especially since with my work load, I can never devote the kind of time to playing it as I did with MPBT Solaris, but... it would make it MUCH more fun for me to be a part of the units I read about years ago as a kid.

I wouldn't mind the unit I'm in per se, so long as I'm working within a team in the best interests of the Dragon. Though, I do have a fondness for the Arkab Legions and the Ryuken.

Being part of the Ryuken-ni would be nice, but ultimately it depends on the assignment of the Dragon and where I am needed and not really what I want :-) ...

I completely agree although I wouldn't mind belonging to a well known canon unit for the aspect to the matches it will bring. It's always adds a little ambiance when you face another house unit that you know the history of. I suspect that the reasoning behind how they are controlled access to these 'elite' units has to do with making sure that their canon reputation is reflected in game by making sure only decent players can get into them. That and hopefully access to better equipment...

I agree. I think the current plan is the best possible option. It allows players to create their "custom" units whilst at the same time presenting an option for any pilot skilled enough to join a "famous" formation without the hassle of "first come, first serve" namegrabbers and unit ursurpers or bickering.

Pilots not organizing in a "guild" with friends or other likeminded people may find it especially tempting as well, as it gives them a greater sense of belonging than just the faction as a whole.

That is, assuming the game actually makes any sort of difference between these formations beyond special paintjobs. It would be weird to have pilots who belong to two units at the same time (custom guild + popular house formation), and I'd also prefer if the game somehow encourages pilots that belong to the same unit to join a game together (possibly achievable via matchmaking).
