Joystick vs. Gamepad

When I played MW4 Mercenaries I used a Microsoft Sidewinder and it was fantastic, but that was the last game I needed it for and it's a bit outdated.
I know a fair number of people didn't care for the MechAssault games, but I remember the controls working pretty well, though I'm thinking that was because the game itself was pretty limited in terms of controls in general.
Anyways, I just want to get some opinions, and if you prefer joysticks, a recommendation would be great. I tend to favor Logitech peripherals, but for a purely game-oriented device I'd welcome other options.
Thanks in advance.

Wish I could learn more about the Razer Artemis, Razer's page didn't give too much info, kinda sad.

I tried mouse and keyboard for Mercenaries, but I had trouble maneuvering the mech to actually aim at something, how did you have it set up? (Was the mouse pivoting the torso, or turning the mech / any key combinations you came up with yourself)

With that being said though, I may try joystick for this game later on.

Except for flightsims that really need a lot of movement precision and thus an analog input.
MW is all about targeting. Movement is important but it has so much input lag (obviously - after all it should feel like a mountain of steel moving) that using keyboard is absolutely good enough. But for precision shooting, a mouse beats a stick anytime.
