Bandwidth is still not the issue, latency is. That said, the kind of connections you just mentioned also typically have large latencies.

Aye, because the network was never designed with it in mind, at all. To this day people are still amazed (not all obviously) when I remind them that email not only doesn't have any guarantee that it will arrive quickly but doesn't even have a delivery guarantee at all. The networks we all rely on were built on protocols and hardware that was designed with redundancy and resilience in mind, not high-speed information exchange in real time.
