WHY ARE THE MAD CATS JUMPING?
(yes, I am familiar withe the S and Pryde, but neither of those should be present yet)

I know it's an older topic but I figured I'd toss up a couple of points.
As Sychodemus said, since the cover in question is from the RoC books reprint and not the original, I doubt FASA had any direct input on the cover design.
Anyone who has worked in the publishing industry knows that authors have little to no input on book covers, and none at all on reprints. As an example, the author Tim Waggoner wrote a few young adult novels for the Dragonlance franchise. When he received his author's copy of the book he found that the cover artist had decided to make on of the characters green. GREEN. There is nothing about him being green in the book, but it seems the artist was bored and had some extra ink waiting to be used.
As has been mentioned before, when Mike wrote this book there was no TRO available to work from, and if he was given an image (rather than half of a verbal description) it was probably the head on view rather than the side view from the back of the TRO. I would guess that this is what led to his description of the Dire Wolf/Daishi as humanoid. After all, the default description of a Battlemech is a humanoid death-machine bristling with ordnance.
The artist's name is Roger Loveless. He's been illustrating for the gaming industry for decades, and while I agree that his cover of Blood Legacy is one of the ugliest things ever published the quality of his current work is impeccable. As an example, see his illustration of a pair of F-105 Thunderchiefs rolling in on a target in Vietnam. http://rogerloveless...alistic.html#27
I'd imagine that Loveless' cover was an attempt to reconcile Stackpole's description of the mech with the newer art available 5 years after initial publication.
Just a guess though.

Even worse, artists for the novels are often employed by the book publishers and not the Battletech developers, so the quality/accuracy of the covers might be off (and sometimes waaaaay off.) No worries though, we know what a Dire Wolf looks like.

The "artist" should be punished big time.

The only thing we need know about the Daishi is that its MW4 incarnation could be fitted with 3 LBX 20s and 2 LBX 10s. Yes the LBX 80 Daishi. At just over 30 kph it takes a while to get in range but the moment it does...

I think the more important question about that Cover...
The Battletech cartoon was the #1 animated TV series??
I loved it back in the day, but #1? Was it that popular?
I would've thought it would last longer if it was #1. I was so sad when it was over, lol.

Captain Planet was the only other show that was on at the time, so Battletech kinda won by default

its a clan wolf omni
From Sarna Net (and the 350, 350 Revised, and 3050 Upgrade TRO's)
The Dire Wolf was the brain-child of the Clan Wolf scientist caste, but was actually first produced by Clan Smoke Jaguar. Hearing rumors that Clan Wolf was developing the "Ultimate Assault OmniMech", the Jaguars won the plans and production rights in a trial that, rumor has it, was fought dishonorably. Production commenced on Huntress in 3010. In 3019, Clan Wolf began production of the OmniMech on Strana Mechty as well; Star Colonel Ulric won a trial of possession to expand manufacture into Clan Wolf. Beyond the limited manufacture of the Dire Wolf on Outreach, all Dire Wolves outside of Clans Smoke Jaguar and Wolf (or the Wolf's Dragoons) are either gifts, isorla, or were acquired through trade.
