I'm re-reading the Blood of Kerensky Trilogy since the Clans began striking the periphery earlier this month. On the secpnd book in the series, Blood Legacy, there is a Daishi on the cover which has humanoid legs rather than the backward canted legs we are used to. In the first book in the series, Lethal Heritage, the Daishi is also described by one of the characters as having humanoid legs. I'm just curious to know what went on behind the scenes that had FASA change the legs from humanoid to backward canted.

Don't go by that cover art. There's so many things wrong with the artist's depiction of a Daishi, that I'm not sure where to begin.

Maybe the "Basis for the n°1 animated series may had something to with it."

Or it's just one of those thousands of incostincencies made by FASA artists.

Artists and writers alike.

Frankly, they probably had it slated to be humanoid to begin with but changed that quickly when they decided this made it look silly.

Remember, an early novel actually described the Thug as a Warhammer with chicken-legs.

The "artist" should be punished big time.

It's like Albrecht Dürer's rendition of a Rhinoceros. Having only heard secondhand descriptions of varying quality, he attempted to make a rendition of the creature to the best of his ability. What emerged was a drawing that, while not unlike a Rhino, was still not a Rhino.

The same, it seems, can apply to Daishis.

He may as well not live anymore, let alone get punished for something he did 3 decades ago. :)

I think the root of the problem was that the clan 'mech illustrations initially were one-dimensional illustrations, without any sort of side or 45-degree profile image to give you any idea what it looks like.

See the followings' image.

With only that to go on, you can see where the issues might arise, especially since prior to clan 'mechs, there were only a scant handful of chicken-walkers in Battletech.

This actually seems like a very plausible explanation, comparing the cover art to the source material.

Aff, although the artist has still done a bit of a ****-poor job, I think. (The timber wolf in the background is half decent!)

That occurred to me as well, but the author was Micheal Stackpole, and say what you will about artists, he was one of the best authors. In the first novel, the Daishi is described as having humanoid legs. So I figured that there had been a conscious decision for it to switch to backward canted legs, and that is what I was curious about.

EDIT: Can you tell that I wrote that out on my phone...

That's the ugliest, sack of sh*t I've ever seen, in regards to 'mech.
I'm certain only the Project Pheonix designs could be worse.
The legs are always meant to be avian, never humanoid. At least, in my opinion

Edit: My 3050 TRO proves my opinion correct, as in the back of the TRO there are side views of all the omni 'mechs.
