I don't get why people get so upset, and all this "honor combat" stuff.

If the 'mechs had nuts, i'd shoot them. Other than that, the legs are the next best thing.

If someone is trying to kill me, and shooting him in the nut is the easiest and most efficient way of making sure that he STOPS trying to kill me, then i'll shoot the god damned nut!

I don't understand why people thing legging is bad form. This is not a gentleman's duel. It is war. I want to win and survive. If that means I need to take your legs out I will. If I'm in a light and you an atlas is if bad form for the atlas to use all its weapons?
No so it is also fine for my light to take out your leg then destroy you.

My vote is viable tactic. If don't want to get legged then put armor on them and maneuver better.

Actually if we're talking 'in universe fluff' there is a level of 'honorable' combat with mechwarriors. granted in a war scenario, you're going to put a mech down as fast as possible... but remember, even in 3049, those mechwarriors out there in their mechs, are akin to Knights riding a steed into battle, Mechwarrior's were generally of noble birth, owned land [insert general Knight/Samurai/ whatever warrior flavor here] and there was a sense of honor amoung many mechwarriors.

That being said. from a gameplay perspective, the ONLY thing that bother's me about legging, is when it's an instant death scenario [Mechwarrior 3]

or when I have a completely fresh mech, I turn a corner, and suddenly, my fresh armor on my leg went from 100% to some 25ish% because some ****** decided to fire an alphastrike into my leg instead of my torso.

It's hard to explain the dislike I have for this, I fully armor my legs ALWAYS, [and generally my mechs are always sporting full armor except maybe head in MW4 since headshots are so damn hard to get] I think it comes from dealing with all the high yeild alphastrieks people use in Mechwarrior 4. A unit commander I had once hated being legged, and alligoried Mech combat to that of a boxing match. and that just out of principal, shooting at the legs should be considered 'dirty' tactics. and in some games, I suppose so [again, see mechwarrior 3.]

Is legging a valid tactic, yes. should it always be done? No... I fall in this weird middle ground... I'll leg a light to take away a speed advantage, I'll leg an assault to take away what little mobility it has... but medium's and heavy's I tend to slug it out with.

It's bad for gameplay.

Let's not forget that many Mech units have quite a bit of honour, even letting defeated opponents leave the field if in mechs that have been worked over. Why? Because they'd like the same thing done for them when both your arms and coolant systems are shot to crap.

A dying war is bad for business.

I think the "quick kill" is the problem not any kind of legging mechanics. Just make the legs like 4x tougher than the torso. There's no engine or gyro or weapon feeds in the legs so I think being able to completely encase them in tons and tons of armor isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

Also i've had a high fever for the last couple days so if i'm not making sense don't worry about it.

how about no
Then youd have ppl headshotting so then youd have to 4x coat the head then the back, then the CT where does it end?

It's a mech game. I have no problems with legging. Will I ***** if I get legged? Of course! But, it comes with playing the game. Shoot me to internal structure on a leg, I slow down, significantly. Do enough damage in one shot to destroy my total internal structure on one leg as the mech was mint..,(ie if I had 20 points internal structure to begin with and you do 21 points in one shot after armor is gone), that leg is gone. Otherwise it can be assumed that the leg is so holed it looks like swiss cheese and most of the damage is just passing through.

But legging keeps mechs intact, and salvage IS good for business. :P

Legging is perfectly viable. If my Goonlance's readouts show someone's skimped on the leg armor, that is where we're aiming. Well, it really depends on what produces the quickest, cleanest kill. Thanks to the uncourteous folks on 4chan, I'm hearing worrying rumors about lack of damage transfer from destroyed sections, Battletech style.

There, I believe that the weapons in MW:O should be made less accurate in general, and the targeting systems of 'Mechs, less responsive; either that, or the apparent or visual speed of 'Mech movement should be increased, thus preventing the overuse of legging.
This all purely from the standpoint of gameplay, because I don't know how accurate or fast those systems should be according to canon.

Making a Mech less accurate or less responsive would seriously hurt the individual skill factor of the game, which is something we probably don't want because it would make 1 vs 1 firefights a lot less interesting. However, increasing the actual visual speed of Mech movement is a great idea, as it allows for better use of strafing mechanics, which would add to the skill of the game. I really do hope that the latter is implemented, as it would probably solve the problem of legging being viewed as something that requires 'no skill'.

I hope that all tactics will be seen as viable and not 'cheap' in any way. When certain tactics are called 'cheap' it means that the game is probably not balanced very well.

Less accuracy is a bad idea, as it takes out the skill-factor from the pilot.
Legging is also no problem. While you shooting at my leg, i don't hang around and wait, i shoot you. So even when you get 1 leg from me, my weapons are fully functional and your torso is critical atleast and/or i have taken out some of your weapons.
So i limp but still all weapons functional, while you don't limp but near dead.
For the dishonorable-tactics thing; Clanners use that rules when fighting themselves. Whenever someone starts to use "dishonorable" tactics every clansmen is not bound to that rules either.
As the freeborn scum never fought with honour we are not bound to this rules when fighting them.

In short, IF there is a "cheesy" tactic then the game needs more balancing.

Mechs have legs.

Legs can be shot.

If you don't put armor on your legs expect them to get destroyed.

This game is loaded with people who ***** and moan about what is entirely acceptable.

I'm really looking forward to wiping the floor with all the ******** on this forum.

"Wan wan wan there shouldn't be a customizable mechlab, wan wan wan I can't buy a founder elite pack, wan wan wan people might 'leg me' because heaven forbid someone actually plays to win, wan wan wan the game doesn't follow the lore 100%."

Get over it people. It's pathetic.

Different day, same lame *** attempt to ***** about something COMPLETELY acceptable in game.

I am a Merc.

I will leg you.

Don't cry when this happens.

I will probably also use a flamer on you when you are standing still to shut you down and cause ammo explosions.

As a heavy/assault pilot i say this: if your mech can out run/turn me, expect loss of legs to slow you down so you cant get away or behind me
