I use a keyboard and mouse for everything, have been happily doing it for about 20+ years in every fps or sim and got used to aiming with a mouse control attached to a cross hair.

Now recently i got accepted into the beta for World of Warplanes, installed it and then began flying a plane and then soon discovered flying the plane was some what horrible because the only way i could control it was to move this rediculous ball around the screen with a wire indicating the front of the air plane. I kept over steering and crashing, flying the plane was horrible and well aiming to shoot anything well.... lets just say i was laughing inside because i couldnt help but think the devs where taking some sort of drug to think anyone could hit anything at all with this rediculous control system.

Anyways i just finished watching the new Hunchback video and what did i see? The very same control system again being used to aim. o.O here i was thinking the people working for MWO had some sense but once again here i am wondering *** where they thinking? The coder that came up with this new control system needs to be shot. ITS HORRIBLE!

Now please tell me theres going to be an option to play with a NORMAL mouse and keyboard system that doesnt involve looking at a fricken ball and wire the entire time i play the game or i will be taking my money elsewhere.

the wire, ball & crosshair aiming system is perfect for mwo imo.

Don't worry, the mouse in MWO works just like in any FPS, except mechs have a sector for torso turns.

The ball you saw is just a "crosshair" of arms weapons.

Well in response to your concern, the dual reticle doesn't show you the direction you are moving per se - arm mounted weapons can track independently from torso mounted weapons, giving you greater flexibility in aiming. The aim of the arms is represented by the ball, while the cross reticle itself is the directional aim of your torso. In addition to that, its good to note that you can twist your upper torso like the cannon of a tank - so again, forward motion is not necessarily in the direction you are looking. I don't think you should be so quick to disparage such a dynamic system on the basis of a video, but on that note, it is f2p, so to each his own.

To add some detail: arms track / aim faster than the torso - the ball will always move faster than the torso reticle, but the torso reticle will catch up a fraction of a second later. The only instances where arm (ball) reticle will move pretty much independently is when the torso has reached either maximum rotation (on the y axis) or maximum decline / elevation (on the x axis) -- this way you can aim far to the side / higher / lower than the full range of motion your torso would give you otherwise =)

Essentially what you're suggesting is an option to lock your arms to your torso? Such an option could be suggested, but to be perfectly frank, I'm not sure I've seen many online multiplayer games which give you the option to limit your capabilities compared to your opponents. I suppose what I'm getting at is that this option to limit yourself would pretty much only be useful to a very small number of people, since it disadvantages you and most people would likely just adapt to it.

You should get pissed before you even try the game....maybe base your rage on a video instead of learning anything about the game. It usually works great that way and doesnt make you look like a dousche at all. And I agree the target system is perfectly fine and logical for MWO, which you'd understand 10 seconds into a game....

I've already played a game with the same control system, it was horrible. Constantly looking at a ball with a wire attached to it all the time. Every other mech game i played did not have it and i played them just fine. Its simple, Cross Hair = arm movement, you move that around with your mouse, when it gets to the edge of your FOV the torso moves. What they are doing is trying to fix something that was not broken and no dispite what you think the ball and wire is in noway superior because 1.) you're looking at a ball instead of a cross hair and 2.) theres a rediculous line attached to it everywhere you move it.

Fyi im not pissed and i'd appreciate it if you did not insinuate i was stupid. I was their playing Mechwarrior/Battletech at the beginning to, I was even there when they had the PODS in places like Intensity playing the crap out of the game and i used to giggle at the big fat guys who had mech badges all over their vests when i beat them.

OP:
You are making a lot of assumptions on our control system that in truth are quite far from the truth. Please try to refrain from speculating on a video you watch. There a ton going on on screen and the "ball and wire" system you're looking at is a targeting system, not a navigation system.

There is a BIG difference between flying with this kind of reticle and aiming.

I haven't played World of Warplanes, but based on your description it sounds like Freelancer. Well don't judge a game, which is interactive, by a non-interactive video. This is NOT how reticle functions in MWO. The reason to have the ball and wire at all is because the arms can move faster than the torso. That is balanced against the fact that your arms are less armored to give the arms and torso different pros and cons when considering weapon placement. Since the team didn't want to do anything lame like limiting players to only firing torso weapons when they align with the arms or locking the arms, nullifying their advantages, they had to create a system to let the player know where each part of the mech was aiming. The result is the ball and wire.

First of all, your mouse has absolutely zero bearing on the direction you travel. You are not piloting by that "ball and wire" system, only aiming.

Secondly, in Freelancer the "ball" stays wherever you put it and your ship will "chase" it endlessly until you return it to the center to resume a straight course. In MWO if you swing the mouse out to the edge of the screen then stop, the crosshair (and your view, which is tied to it) will move toward the ball until they are aligned and then STOP. If you don't move your mouse the ball returns to the center of the screen, it does not stay where it is and keep you perpetually chasing it. Just think of it as your view "catching up" with the arms.

Lastly, you can fire your arm weapons at any point on the screen, you only need to "align" yourself for torso weapons.

Your proposed system of moving the cross hair to the edge of the screen to move to torso is terrible because it would require huge sweeping movements and lots of guesswork to aim your torso. This way you simply place the "ball" on target and wait for the crosshair to catch up. It's much more precise, natural, and easy to comprehend.

P.S. You have bigger problems then controls in a video game if you get pissed off over a line on your screen.

i am very sure *coughs* that mouse and keyboard players will have no problems playing MWO, just like any FPS/ MechWarrior game...

Does this mean, there will be only mouse and keyboard control? Some of us old-timers still have our sidewinder FF2 joysticks sitting on a shelf collecting dust and would love nothing more than to put them back into service.

According to past polls, there seems to be a healthy mix of keyboard / mouse vs joystick users =)

Don't make assumptions about a game you have never played. When you play it then decide.

I dunno, I recognize the description of what he's talking about, and while yes Mechs pilot differently then planes (or in my experience with it star fighters, damn wing commander saga) the "ball and wire" method makes it almost impossible to target fast moving objects, to the point I have to get a joystick to play 1 game. Now again, as stated mechs pilot differently and if the reticule were, say, the targeting only reticule and tied to the mouse and had no bearing on steering, Then it wouldn't be so bad. However if you mix steering into the mix, you wind up with a lot of mouse users spinning in circles trying to target 1 thing. I'll have to wait and see what it is with MWO, but I do understand the OP's concern. Now if you'll excuse me, I still have 5 missiles to shoot down before they hit my carrier...DAMN CATS!

Your wrong in many ways. Im in WoWP since Alpha and it was easy flyable with Joystick, to fly with a mouse/keyboard nearly impossible. Changed heavily since the last patches, its now hard to fly with Joy, because of input lags and such, Pilots with keyboard/mouse are now the matchwinners. I think you dont spent a minute in WoWP Forums to read for a good setup on mouse(KB as there are some issues for sensitivity and so on. I paused Betatesting WoWP for a while till its flyable with Joystick again.
And to judge by a Video how you would do in MWO is not that good. You would do very fine with Mouse/KB in MWO.
