Wow. I have just filed away a mental note to shoot Mcchuggernaut from the back if I ever see him on the other team in his Atlas.

current favored build as of 6/23/2013 AS7-D

You have GOT to be kidding me! Two tons of ammo for TWO LRM 15's? Why bother? 2 Tons of Ammo for your AC20 is fine because you'll either be dead or the other team will by the time you get there with your 300 engine.
Add another comment to your OP, Yes you are the biggest mech in the game, but you cannot be a jack of all trades w/out sacrificing viability in any of them.

Refer to my K/D in this mech. It usually hovers right above or below 3.0. Had a few bad matches the last couple days, and so it dropped a couple points under, but you get the picture. It's obviously working. Getting behind me isn't as easy as it is to do to some noob running a trial Atlas.

Step 1: Stay with the group. Keep your face pointed at the enemy. That way your teammates will keep lights off your back, and your not getting shot from behind, in which case your rear armor doesn't matter. What I DO keep back there is sufficient to survive a few passes from a strafing light and gives you plenty of time to perform step 3.

Step 2: Enjoy the fear, anger, and confusion of other assault pilots that can't figure out how you just cored them and didn't take a crippling amount of damage in return. Watch heavies and mediums try and run when they realize they are barely scratching you and half their mech is blown off. Armor is GOOD.

Step 3: When encountering a light by yourself without support, back up into an obstruction such as a hill, rock, or building. (It is always good practice to fight with cover nearby to step in and out of while firing. Only a dufus stands around in the open or charges in straight lines over open ground.) Watch them panic when they realize they can't get behind you, and shooting your front side is pretty much worthless. Most of the time I have found they run off when they realize this guy knows how to counter them, and they can't dodge my AC/20, SRMs and pulse lasers forever. The dumb ones that stay and try to fight an Atlas from the front end up dead.

Final tip: Use and abuse the seismic sensor. Nobody sneaks up on you with that baby equipped. It's practically cheating.

Bought the AS-7RS© while beeing reduced in price. Played with some different load outs.

Summary: Performance of the AS is below my K2. Even survivability of my K2 is higher then driving the Atlas (lol), because of the much higher mobility.

Bringing an Atlas to the battlefield is like an invitation for all enemy forces in shooting range to focus on the AS. While focused, even the armor brings you nothing against all this pinpoint damage that any half intelligent player is focused on currently.

Torso twist? Useless against enemies shooting from all directions on you, because they can simply outmaneuver the AS.

I'm realy unimpressed by the AS, but maybe it's just not my playstyle and some people can handle this whale.

An Atlas needs a few good teammates, then the whole team will prosper and reap the rewards. Without that, an Atlas is not nearly as useful. I was reminded of this as I was leveling my Boar's Head this weekend.

I love the Atlas but it just does not translate well in a twitch game. Speed, vertical movement and agility rule the MWO roost.

Not bad, but it looks like it will run a bit hot.

Here, try this

Replacing the LPLAS with 2 MLAS lets you save 5 tons, but retain the same damage, nearly the same range, and are actually a little cooler (LPLAS really needs some love, it's too hot and heavy for what it is).

With the 5 tons saved, we can also shave a little bit of armour - bring the legs to a respectable 65 each and the arms to 60, that's still plenty - and we can actually fit in a 325 STD engine and an extra heatsink in it! Bring up your movement, your torso twist, and benefit from an extra sink while basically doing the same damage and no functional loss in survivability (I take all my Atlai to 65 legs and never lose one, and even with good twisting you're still likely to lose a side torso before the enemy bores through all the arm and its internals), a total upgrade!

(edited: accidentally dropped the wrong build in the link. Whoops!)

I totally agree with you on this, I love using the ATLAS AS7-D-DC, and I do have it max out in the pilot tree skill so it can move faster than the others on the battle field, but hate it when I am the only assault mech and the rest of the team are lights or mediums, and the other team is full of heavy and assault, I can only do so much damages and tank so much before I am finally killed by the other team.
