Custom Mech textures

People could incorporate their clan logos, or encourage "original" Mechs.
I haven't seen this done with many games. (Toribash has full customizable textures, and I believe Mario Kart has some sort of insignia system.) I know you can probably select Mech paint jobs, but it would be cooler if you had original versions.
Thoughts/opinions?

With the popularity of the repainted concept art thread in the fan art forum I hope the devs take note.

Being able to repaint and full customize the mech's paint-job and etc would make it to where you can really stand out and make a name for yourself and even have an appearence with the name.
Nothing would be better then having people remember you or reconize you by a special design that's all your own.

Having fully-customized textures is likely not going to happen. Those would have to be server-side for anyone else to be able to see them. They would also have to be moderated by someone on the server side so no inappropriate material is viewed. Having that times 100,000 "I want my own 1337 paint job" players would be far too much work.
Having a selection of textures to choose from is likely to happen. More exclusive patterns will likely be available from the cash shop. I could see some sort of logo/insignia system, but that might also be too much work for the devs.

Again though, not seeing the custom insignias should be DEFAULT to prevent parents/people from whining about it. Its their fault for turning off the filter.

Even if it's first person only doesn't mean no one is going to see it. I'd still customize everything because other people would see it. Sort of like a calling card. Heck, merc corps would want to do this so their lance groups are easily Identifiable by coloration and patterns.

It doesn't have to be server side to work. It could easily be something that's sent to you on client side for you to be able to see. All that would need to happen is have the server send you that data file and either save it to your computer or just load it into memory. Eventually you might have a big cache of decals and etc, or just take a little extra time to have it stored in cache for a little time.

Self managed community systems for custom paint jobs and decals aren't really extra work if they have the community help with filtering out the trash of the community. Just because it's extra work doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done at all.
Overal I support the idea fully because it's not that hard to implament without ever making too much extra strain on the servers by making a localized cache of textures and decales that can be either stored perminately till you clear it, or temporarily for a short period of time.
As far as moderation is concerned you can have a bit of community control + dev branch for something like that to keep it tasteful. Majority of the community is mature enough to handle something like that. It's mostly the newer members and the younger ones that find the other stuff amusing to do.
I want it customizable so I can see the creativity of everyone in addition to their own personal skills as a Mech Pilot. It'd be amazing to see how everyone sets themselves apart in both skill, mech customization, pilot style, and by creativity. MWO is a reboot to the series and it'll be how the game plays that keeps us coming back for more, but with a little freedom will make a lot of us die-hards and even the average fans fall in love with that freedom and keep us constantly working on something in and out of game.
The big stuff make a strong game and the little stuff make the community strong as well with community.

Maybe we could have something like that?

Clients should be in control on whether they want to see other player unique skins (by default, this would be set to NO for safety reasons) 24 players, each having a unique 1MB skin (10MB for those who think bitmap is a valid file format) having to transfer to each player is asking a LOT of their network connections.
You can't think of it as a "It's just a 1 time 24MB download". But if they choose YES I want to see other player skins, then it would download them. (I would love the ability to say YES but then select players whom you want to show the default skin, in case you get the eventual person who creates offensive skins)

I think the assumption that you would be downloading an actual image file is an incorrect one. Obviously it is pure speculation that we'll get to customize the skins at all, but I would bet it would be more like an in-game modification system where you just place your decals and other prefab objects on the model, and the result is a tiny little <100K compressed text/xml file that defines the positions and other details of each decal.

You're downloading a resource, it can be in any common or proprietary format. The thing is, it's an additional file download which uses up client resources, and each client needs a copy of every unique "skin" in order for them to see it.
I'm still of the belief that I'd want it defaulted to OFF. It's fine for you to see your own skins since they are a locally cached resource.

Quoting my original unmodified post, where I specifically state that first-person only is during battle, and that there may be third-person in MechLab.

Arkas -- the customized texturing would have to be created player-side by each pilot who wants their own 1337 paint job, stored server-side so everyone has access to it, and then downloaded by every player who wants to see the customized textures. Every time you encounter someone you haven't played with/against who has their own 1337 paint job, it would have to be downloaded by your client for you to see it. They would then be saved locally. Sure, it can do that in the background, but that's still a lot of downloading and may affect your play while the download is happening. And just think -- each player will have different 'Mechs, so you'll have to download the 1337 paint job for each of them.
Logos/insignias are a bit different in that the files would certainly be smaller.

No to custom textures
If there is an ability to turn them off and its off by default, why even bother? No one will turn them on, since many people will add stupid and/or offensive crap on their mechs, or they'll paint their mechs with certain color schemes to make them harder to spot on certain maps. I'll personally have it turned off and kept off.....but I guess the devs can add it for people that really, really, really want it....

Default option to not view custom textures/insignias. Your argument is invalid.
