I guess it has its place on the battlefield as a mech designed specifically for urban combat but, It looks like a trashcan with legs. The R2-D2 of mechs, the ugly duckling of the mechworld, the out of shape mech that just wants to find true love. In every forum there is at least one person dropping an Urbie bomb.

It just looks accident prone to me, like the mech you would use for the annual mech carnival's side show. Somebody explain their fascination with this mech and what makes the UrbanMech a prized and sought after possession.

There is no explanation or excuse. Urbanmechs are the My little Pony's reboot series of mechwarrior. No one can explain why they are so popular, and no one really cares.

This is surprisingly accurate. Some folk really like it due to novelty, others will hate on it without recourse cause of it's looks.

That's about it. There's nothing more to add, other than personal reasons.

And I've added nothing constructive and new to the topic .... sooo

Pretty much somes up the whole Urbie obsession. :)

Sure, it's a bit ungainly looking, and sure, there are better machines in the weight class, but if you can hold your own in an Urbanmech, you're doing it right.

Let it pass beside you. Once the game starts, you'll see an urban mech in the battlefield in 1/50 combat drops.

It's sort of like how hipster dudes wear those chunky glasses and girl pants even though they look rediculous.

If I had a dime for every incredibly ugly soldier I've ever met who could still kick the **** out of the enemy, I'd be a rich veteran.

I read a statement on this subject on these forums a month or so ago. I can't remember exactly what was said but it went something like this:

When you fight against an Assault Mech while piloting an Urban Mech, it's like getting into a fist fight with both arms tied behind your back and a blindfold on. If you lose, it's not surprising but if you survive and actually take down that Assault Mech, then glory is instantly and eternally yours.

...well i may have paraphrased a bit, lol but this is why i think the Urbie is to popular.

So in other words the Urban mech is popular for all the wrong reasons.

Even though it looks quite ehm different, the main reason why people are keen to love or hate it may also come from the one and only ULTIMATE question... what was going through the head of the "designer" when this Mech came to life ... you see where I'm going? :)

So is there something extremely well thought behind the idea OR was it like ... hmm what will I draw now, the eyes are rounding around the room and then when he looks below the desk ... hmm oh well fu.. this!

I think it has a lot more to do with R2-D2 nostalgia.

You've pretty much answered your own question right there. There's nothing secret to it that you're missing. I guess the only other thing to add is that it is actually noted in the battletech lore that the Urbie is regarded as worthless. "consigned to garrison duty" was the phrase I believe was used in the technical readout.
