I like the head redesign; it looks like a scouting setup, with a rangefinder monacle and low profile.
As to why anyone would use it over, lets say, a Jenner? Well, I don't know how available every Mech will be at launch. It would be strange from a game design standpoint for everyone to be able to drive everything right off the bat. So you will probably either drive a Commando, or will deny an 'upgrade' in chassis to avoid it.
As for why use it over a Jenner? Lets see, the COM-2D has amazing firepower for its size, and practically no heat issues. It has a small profile and is suitably fast. Sure, the Jenner is faster and better armored, but will also probably be harder to drive due to the jump jets and speed, have WAY more heat issues when using every system it has, and will be more expensive to keep up. Their effective range of combat is identical, and, unlike the TT game, piloting and aiming become the more important factors.
Don't get me wrong, if I have my druthers, I'll probably go Jenner 90% of the time. But the Commando is an interesting enough choice that, if I am not going to be a dedicated light Mech pilot, I'll probably just keep getting experience on my Commando and upgrade it through experience. If they do this right, in the time it takes person A to get a Jenner, the guy who dedicated himself to the Commando will be comparable. Well, until the Jenner guy gets some trigger time in HIS new Mech...
