Okay this is an epic fight with a question mark ending.

I propose (time) 3:12 to you. Really was this the best answer for protecting the Palace? Who is this YeahWhoooo with no common sense?

At this point in the clip no one from the Clans sees him. It's Vulture vs 2 Atlas 1 Nova Cat and Fek315s Uziel.
Now if I was in the Vulture I would have ether worked on the Uziel first from behind the wall, then flanked the rest because the Nova Cat and Atlas can't turn all that fast. DUHHH?!?!

Or I would have not fired a shot found some wing men then came back to kick some BEEEEP.
Or Since the Vulture has LRMs I would have stopped shut down and got some distance then Flank from afar.
Or I would have run away and gone rouge.

But since FEK315 was piloting the Uziel I suppose the Vulture really never has a chance. :) :D

What would you have done?

First of all, he's Davion... without lore-shield, they never win.

Second, the attackers are not Clans, those are Steiner. :D

I believe the point was to delay the enemy for as long as possible while the royal family made their Evac. In the process all lower echelon units were completely expendable. This is the start of the FedCom Civil war. Steiner Vs Davion. Not clan. Though a lot of the fighting featured Merc units with heavy Clan Tech load outs.
What would I have done if I was him? About the same, to serve my house.
What would I have done if I was me but in the BT/MW 'verse? I would have been one of the attacking Merc Corps.

i've seen this video thousands of times.

it was not meant to be a tactical video, it was a dramatic video of the fall of the Davion palace. he was supposed to die for dramatic effect, and to feel the sense of loss. he knew he was going to lose no matter what he did, he couldn't escape.

if it were me, i would have probably done the same thing, acting as a distraction allowing the others to escape, though i would have tried to eject, which i think he does but never 100% sure...

Exactly, it was a story plot for the game to have him die quickly and heroically. Also given the fact that both 'mechs that went down outside the hangar didn't have active ejection seats wasn't very realistic. Then you have the fact the Shadowcat was taken down "quicker than Al Bundy" from the missle volley.

If I were this guy I would've retreated to a better position, hit and run (he had two full LRM racks) these guys as much as possible instead of trying to be a roadblock. When ammo was low close and try and take one of them with me (before ejecting :P ).

Not Me I would have fought to be able to make a difference and to survive to fight another day for another fight that I could be more effective.
At this his point his death means nothing, he is almost a coward taking the easy way out. Had he really wanted to save the Palace he could have at least taken out the Uziel.
My less on this is fight smart so you can keep fighting.

On another note You guys are AWESOME! I love the history and details. That's why I can't wait to wing for all of you!

Taking out a mech is irrelevant. What, is Steiner going to look at their one lost Uziel and go "oh, well, this invasion just got too expensive. Better pull out!"? He assumed he was buying time for the royal family to escape. As a harasser, he would have been largely ignored, or that absolutely overpowering force would have sent off a couple mech to deal with him while the main force proceeded onward, and he would have saved no one. He possibly didn't anyways, but not knowing the exact circumstances, communications being out and everything, he didn't know whether that was the case, so he could either run and probably not get away, or attack in case there was still a point left in a delaying action. That being the case, the only way for him to make any difference was, not to destroy as much as possible, but to tie up as much as possible. It didn't matter what he targeted; he did what he should have: he stuck himself right in front of the main enemy force and made himself the biggest distraction that he could, for as long as he could, and he largely succeeded, because the entire main enemy force engaged him, rather than most or all of them blowing him off.

For all we know, Joanna Dresari never would have escaped without that action. Sure, it's doubtful that one mech pilot made the difference, but all the forces in that palace fighting for all they were worth in general probably did.

first off he was a davion loyalist and he was sacrificing himself so that the dropships full of palace staff could escape and second those werent clanners attackign they were steiner loyalists if you didnt hear what his lancemate said about the donegal guards

I think an alive harasser who can empty his weapons/LRM's and report enemy positions is a lot better than how it played down in the video. Sure he delayed the enemy forces (lance) for what 20 seconds, but I think a sustained presence is better. Also he had the advantage of being on his home field which could work for him.

Listen to the radio chatter around 0:25, he stayed to fight because those were the orders given.

Again, this assumes they'd care about his harrassment. If I was that force, I'd dispatch two mechs to kill him, move the rest of the force, and we'd be delayed by zero seconds, instead of twenty seconds, because we wouldn't stop firing on our other targets (he drew the entirety of their fire for that time from what we could see). Also, there was no one left to spot for.

The problem is that his actions stopped being about tactics long before he reached the central courtyard; they had already lost in virtually a matter of seconds. The only thing he could do was put that loss off for a few moments and hope it might give someone that extra scrap of time to escape alive, and since he wouldn't have gotten out alive in a conspicuous mech like that no matter what (and being that close to the enemy front, probably wouldn't have gotten out alive under any circumstance), delaying that enemy front from swallowing up potential survivors was about the best that could be done, something only achieved by stopping their whole line, not a mech or two while the rest continued unabated. We know people did survive the attack, at least two, I believe, and possibly quite a few more. Who knows how many owe that to this guy.

Truer words were never spoken.

OP, what would I have done? The Mad Dog has a big speed and range advantage on everything in that battlefield. Behind him there is also a solidish wall and he is the only one who has indirect fire capabilities. See what I am getting at?

By doing his rambo thingy, he gains what? 25 seconds of time? And he his the last mech defending, so he should know better than buying half a minute. I reckon with a bit of luck, he could at least cripple the uziel and seriously **** off those nova cats, leading them into the forest and allowing more people to escape. So yeah, he sucked hard basically. Unfortunately the Stackpole star was not guiding him that night, otherwise he would have headshotted 3 of them in one go, and by the combined effect of their stackpoling, the attack would have been repelled.

edit: by the way, what do you people think of the graphics and acting in this video? i think they were pretty good :P i remember as a kid thinking that they were real XD

What woujld I have done? Sure as **** not fire into an entire lance of them ll at once. Hit n run tactics for sure. I woulda focus fired on one mech, or atleast gotten in hits as they presented themselves. Just running sideways like he did...well, that just worked to speed the video up.
