Seriously...
  • Mechwarrior Online
  • Reign of Thunder
  • Hawken
  • Mechwarrior Tactics
Am I missing any one?

I can only hypothesize that this sudden and rush to stick us in a Mech of some sort has to be related to the state of technology... Or in other words, I think the power we, the typical gamer, have at our disposal has finally met an arbitrary capacity that developers feel confident tackling such demanding content and genre.

It's kind'a like George Lucas and Star Wars... By his explanation he choose to start the story in the middle because the special effects industry had not yet reached sufficient maturity to do justice to the stories (Yeah, I'm not buying it either)... Praise be to Jar-Jar.

Anyway... I'm bored, let's dialogue. :)

Thoughts?

I just think that no one has touched the genre in so long that its just time for some new ones.

I cant really remember the last good mech game ive played.

Yeah, a MekTek game. Something like Mechwarrior 2 remake, I think. :)

Its all part of a program by DARPA to get pilots ready for the real life remotely operated battle walkers they hope to deploy for MOUT in Afghanistan in a few years.

we're up to 8 games that are out (or will be) by the end of 2012 (delays not withstanding).

MW:O - Mechwarrior Online (F2P)

MW:LL - Mechwarrior Living Legends (Mod)

MW:T - MechWarrior Tactics (F2P - Unity3 Browser Based)

MW:TC - Mechwarrior Tactical Command (iOS)

MT:SAT - MekTek Solaris Assault Tech (Unity3 engine)

Mechlike games

AC5 - Armored Core 5 (console)

Hawken - Matrix style?

RoT - Reign of Terror (that's an unfortunate abbrev.)

Sweet baby Neptune...

I agree this seems reminiscent of a cyclical re-boot of the genre... That said, why now? And to that end, why so flipping many?...

Doesn't this all just scream "copy-cat" to anyone?

I don't see copy-catting going on. That's a lot of different perspectives on a very well-known genre. Variety is the spice of life, after all! And I intend to try every single one that I am able to, funds and time withstanding!

And that is where I draw the line. I only have so much time and money. I have a full-time job and am a full-time student with a family. MWO has what is left of my attention.

(AC5 does look pretty badass though)

I think it's because the genre was formed a temporary hole (read: long time no games). Then, around 2009, it was announced to restart the series MechWarrior. And then, all of a sudden decided to plow not plowed area (because they themselves had not previously able to come up with anything new).
As a result, taking into account the time for preparation and development - all matched to 2012+. Although it is not the fact that all games will be released or will be in the process of release.

And yet, all the games with the name MechWarrior is the official . Consequently, all originally based on the universe BattleTech. And the "copy-paste" is not relevant here.

Sorry if clumsily written.
