As mentioned in Devblog 5, there is the ability to freelook around the cockpit, I'd imagine this is toggleable using the mouse by default, but can a Track-IR be used too?

For those who don't know, Track-IR is a bit of head tracking hardware which uses a series of infra red LEDs attached to your headset and a receiving camera to track movement, this is then transformed into view movements in game.

Track-IR is MAINLY used in simulator style games such as flight sims and games like ARMA 2, having it in MW:O would be amazing.

TrackIR couldn't be used unless the game integrated it. By what I've heard, the SDK and means to do so (especially when you've already support mouse looking) is extremely easy, and NaturalPoint is always looking for sim games to pimp their tech.

MW is right up TrackIR's alley when it comes to what it offers sim fans.

This would be really cool. I've never used Track-IR though, and I have no choice but to use a laptop, are the two compatible?

There are free face-tracking programs out there that require only the use of a webcam. For instance, FaceTrackNoIR.

The TrackIR hardware uses USB connections, and a software application to operate the device. The TrackIR camera will easily sit on a laptop monitor given the design of the feet.

The only problem with TrackIR in MWO - its accuracy(in other words - tracking by the neck movement) isn't enough for proper aiming.

That FaceTrackNoir sounds pretty sweet. I'm dl;ing it now to give it a test run.

Wonder if voice chat is going to be built into the game, or if people are going to need thier own, ie., skype, etc?

I wouldn't use TrackIR to aim a weapon, just to move my POV on the fly. Lets me look at panels for ancillary information when I need to and gives a deeper sensation of immersion.

How cool would it be if light and shadow tracked across the cockpit geometry?

there is a search feature on the forum
and about 100 track IR threads why do we need another one

For the same reason there is punctuation in spelling, and you chose not to use any...

As someone who uses it constantly in ARMA 2, it really is accurate enough

punctuation unnecessary, message was short, delivered and understood as indicated by hostile response
there was no chance of misinterpretation of message or confusion of context

I'm using it too, in Arma 2 as well - and i'm sure you aren't using it for the weapon's fine aim, because you can't really accurate and fast aim the reticle or cursor with TrackIR, it's providing only the head tracking. Furthermore, anatomically, human neck isn't intended to provide an accurate aim, which is a job for our eyes. The neck only provide "rough" sector tracking.

Judging by the fact that you seem to be a regular poster here, I would assume that you already know that lots of threads get reposted and rehashed on a weekly basis. So why are you asking the question in the first place, other than to be hostile to the OP?

Your post smells of hypocrisy and being unfriendly for the sake of it.

Actually it's a legitimate point. Most people consider TrackIR for looking around the cockpit .This is the first thread specifically for using it to control the reticle, which would be an extremely powerful option.

Having tried to do that myself in other games, its an extremely UNpowerful option. :P Trying to get your neck to have the same dexterity as your hand/fingers is ridiculous. I tried it, and its insanely unweidly.

However... amputees playing Mechwarrior. I like it!

NaturalPoint has eye tracking hardware, but TrackIR, to my knowledge, isn't one of them. It uses 3 points affixed to a clip to determine your head's position. Since your eyes can move independent of your head, unless you were looking straight everytime, the accuracy would be off.

It does let you use your head though. With voice commands for firing and acceleration maybe some pedals for turning...you could get some stuff done. Wouldn't be as accurate as a guy with hands and fingers, but you could move the reticle around.
