In response, I would have to say its dependant on the length of the engagement and the terrain involved...Just like the table top game, sometimes its MUCH more advantageous to have ammo weaponry for short quick and dirty...but if you are playing an objectives scenario with no time limit....the energy weapons are clearly superior.

Is having infinite shots worth a 43.5% reduction in damage?

To give you an idea of how all weapons are viable, I saw a 1v1 between two Hunchbacks and the winning shot was from a Hunchback, sans arms and the AC/20, headshotting the other Hunch with the Small Laser. It was an awesome duel, reminded me of a great boxing match.
Also - in reference to 4 ML's vs. AC/20, the way to think about it is: Lasers need time on target to do full damage. AC/20 is either hit, or don't. That means that pilot skill greatly determines the effectiveness of the weapon. Sure ML's can put out the damage in groups - if you can keep them on target.

This is an extremely attractive take on lasers, and am glad to hear they will be implemented in this way. I think I recall reading some of the old novels with scenes like this, and wishing I could pull it off in TT B-tech. Thanks for the heads up.

To be clear, it's damn near impossible to keep a laser on a specific area while both you and the target are moving. Remember that A) people aren't holding still; B ) The ground isn't a massive flat surface all over - there are hills, valleys, etc; C) People are twisting, jump-jetting, and all sorts of things to throw your aim off.
It's not just a matter of 'having good aim,' but also having good positioning, and the ability to know what your target will do. For example I know paul likes to hide his Jenner on ridges and fire from them, then retreat. Knowing that means I can predict he'll do it and drop LRM's on his head.

Garth, Im curious if you have seen instances where you can 'cross the T' on a mech which is facing/attakcing at 90 degrees to you (which ends up straight towards or away form you) and thus minimize the lateral motion of his mech in comparrison to yours. This would make focused fire much easier.
As for pulse lasers, they are available in 3049, but not in any of the mechs we have confirmed so far....lets see what today brings (mechlabs? new mech? More play balance commentary?)
