Just making the point guys, if this is the case, let us pick where we play.

Far too many of us have friends from across the globe, don't pigeon hole us into regions, let us select between those available so we can play where we like, with who we like, when we like.

Tribes Ascend did it right, they also did the whole pay for closed beta access thing right as well hint hint :P

be nice to be able to play where you want, I know I would be sad if my torthkin trothkin (ninja muthatrucka), and Star Captain in my unit, Duff would not be able to play with the rest of the Bear's 304th due to him being in Germany

Considering my GF is in Denmark and I am in The US I see potential problems for me if the servers are fully localized.

I think its good to give us the option sure. I mean most people will choose to play locally anyway to to reduce lag, unless you REALLY wanted to play with someone overseeas, then I don't think you should be denied.

The Skjaldborg has a large EU and South African player base, along with our US group. I really, really hope we don't get forced to split up.

wut?! please don't split the game universe! the horror!! /o\
seriously. EVE hosts everyone in one world and so should MWO.

OP: where did you hear this?

Edit:
Thinking about it, my guess is that what he meant was this: There are going to be servers distributed locally that will technically host the individual matches. But there will only be one game world shared by all of them. So it's a transparent behind-the-scenes thing. The server to host a particular match would be chosen automatically and invisibly based on the players' locations. Anything else wouldn't make sense.

So what this amounts to is that I can't play the russians, I can't play the europeans, etc etc Way to make the world smaller.

I too am hoping for behind the scenes cluster magic. Would enable them to put down single servers for maintenance without shutting down the game as a whole.

LAG is an issue and needs to be addressed. But I want to be able to play with everyone. I want to meet folks you learned to know here on the board.

In my unit, I'm the only european. It would kinda suck if they made it region specific, without the ability to choose a server location to play on.

But from a general reading of the quote, I think Russ is just saying, every region will have its dedicated on land servers. But you won't be locked down to just your region server, and can choose where to play. Hopefully. :)

Some how I doubt they'll do something like this. I mean, all other MMO games, while suggesting which server is the best one for you, don't actually force you to play on that server.

I don't see MW:O forcing it's player base into specific regions like that due to what has already been mentioned, it really wouldn't be a good idea.

if anything shows lag, it's BF3 server non-local with 64 players. Not cool. Gotta have local servers to keep the ping down. Unless you sacrifice graphics but that sucks cause the Battletech universe should not concentrate on mechs alone, but also the environment their in. Especially if you have an interactive destructable environment. Are you hiring? I can help on development.

I absolutely agree with OP. Region-based servers are a good thing but please, don't force people into one, because of their location. Let them choose.

I'm sure the devs are fully aware that the community isn't big enough to be split into regions.

Umm first i don't need to pay for tribes ;p second. Tribes did it really right with providing the ability to select IN game between the European and the US server for me in Germany the European is of course a lot better

Don't be ignorant guys.
Having localized servers is a great thing.
Just because we have localized servers does not mean we can't play with people from around the world.
