If you include missile launchers and not only "guns", the Crusader Mech could be a prominent example. CRD-6M variant even had double SSRM-4 launchers located there.

I won't lie - guns on legs aren't the most efficient design concept.

However, they're not quite as uncommon as you think. First of all a "Leg Mounted" weapon often means that it's attached to the hip. An example of this is the Unseen Crusader.

Hmm I always envisioned the SRM 6s being launched from the lower leg area where the six openings are located. Three on each side of either leg.

(Deleted initial comment because I forgot the multiquote. ;)

If the mechs that were designed for it were included in game (Ex: Crusader) then of course it should be included.

Though a major issue would be making sure your fire clears whatever ground cover you might be standing behind.

Yeah, imagine standing near a wall and firing off your SRM 6 in each leg, with pre-exsisting damage to those legs. Legging yourself like a baws.

one of most stupit movies ever. why shes not holding that rifle with her hands?? women* i dont get them.

Considering the fact that she's portraying a character in a Robert Rodriguez movie, I think you should rather blame Rodriguez (and perhaps also Tarantino).

I'd imagine having weapons on the legs would be nearly impossible to hit with unless you were standing still or moving extremely slowly. Start moving too fast and you'll probably just end up shooting into the ground or the sky.

I'm like 99% sure I was able to mount 2 critical slots worth of equipment in the legs in Mechwarrior 2: Mercs.

Usually was jumpjets but I swear I put med lasers there a couple times.

That said, considering the INCREDIBLE mechanic we have for torso/arm aiming, I'd rather we keep our weapons above the belt ;)

note the two cylinders on each hip. the idea is that three missiles fire out of each tube in rapid succession. the six openings in the shins are more for aesthetic value, as thier shape would not be conducive to firing any type of missile that I am aware of. Just my take on the artwork though.

OP: See the 3025 Wasp and Wasp LAM for further examples (yes, I use the OLD 3025 Tech Manual LOL).

Guns on legs sounds to me like more unrealistic uber meching like a 12 year old kid, who doesn’t understand how that wouldn’t work, who just draws alotta guns “because omg more guns is cooler”.

Hips are a different story since they rotate with the direction travel. Since they don’t normally pitch, you cant aim as well so guided munitions or short range AOE weapons would make the most sense.

Unless you had a HulaGirl mech. Shed gyrate those hips and thread a needle with an AC2 at 1000 meters.

Edit: Question. Why does the Crusader have two completely different feet?

First off. The scotsman did it better Posted Image

Second it would be an over all waste of space. Better more heatsinks then more weapons. I don't see the army or marines putting shotguns on the wheels & tracks of the Abram do you. ;)

Unless it's in a turret of it's own, anything not on the hip or above would also require you to stop moving to fire it. Putting a turret on the leg that counters the motion of the leg seems like an unnecessary engineering boondoggle.

The only reason most mechs dont have weapons in thier legs is tactical, if you are behind any kind of cover the legs weapons would not be able to fire. Additionaly, legs are the favored place to put extra heat sinks, which takes up crit space, since water helps a lot with heat and legs are the first part of a mech in the water ;)

This is exactly the reason...heat sinks go in the legs first, then in the torso if you need to cool many energy weapons.

There's a Wasp variant which mounts an SRM 4 on one leg. Plus the GOL-5D Goliath has a MG on each leg. There are a number of other canon designs which also mount weapons on the legs.

Of course, if you're Jade Falcon, you can just use your leg mounted jump jets.

Given the hard point system I doubt we are going to see many mechs with weapons in legs, if any.

Mounting weapons in legs can be useful, the earlier example of the Crusader and its SRM's fitting the bill for surprise attacks. Sadly its a tactic that is largely impractical. Its why all tanks have turrets to mount their main guns in, rather than in the hull, as you could only fire in one direction, which makes little sense when you have a device to swing your weapons around 360 degree's.

Apart from tank destroyers and self propelled artillery, armoured vehicles tend to mount heavy and main weapons in the most maneuverable part of the vehicle (the turret). Same applies to mech design, why have weapons fixed forwards when you'll need maximum range of motion for them? Okay they're useful for a bit of surprise firepower, but once you torso twist all they do is take up valuable heatsink/jumpjet room.

Don't get me wrong, 4x SRM-4 leg mounted launchers is an evil nasty surprise to throw at an opponent, but that's a trick you can only pull off once in a fight, twice if you're good. Given what we've seen of mech warfare in the demo vids, you are going to have to be really good to continuously use leg mounted weapons during a match to make it worth mounting them at all.

Hellbringer/Loki had Leg mounted SRMs.

Missile launchers are cool on legs sicne they home on target and does not require precision aiming.
