Most of the leg weapons I can recall are either on relatively static Missile/extreme range 'mechs for anti-infantry/light armor or are Small SRM racks.

Leg mounted guns on quads make sense as they have plenty of blind spots to counter and they can't really rotate their torsos (i never seen ANY fluff mentioning they can rotate their torsos).

Guns on legs are hard to aim, missiles however don't have that issue, unless they are RLs or MRMs which are unguided. Leg are also the favoured location of A-PODS and B-PODS for obvious reasons. Heat sinks as well since heat sinks work better under water, but the IS DHS of course can't go to the legs.

I'm holding out for the crotch-mounted Gauss Rifle.

I'm told the Viking had leg mounted weapons. I think the idea was that the leg mounted MGs were supposed to fend off infantry and battle armour that was trying to swarm it.

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Viking

I'm also told that the Ares/Rhodes project had weapon clusters on each leg. Of course most people don't like to acknowledge that thing even existed.

Plus using the classic battletech customization rules you can make a Clan mech with PPCs in it's legs. Then you get... PP-knees!

As far as I know there are no mechs with guns directly attached to their legs - is there a reason for this? I ask because a lot of the mech's weight and structure is in the legs so why let them go to waste and not mount them with guns? This could even be sexy...

The only downside I see is that you only have a short period in which to fire between taking steps

3025 Crusader has 2 SRM's mounted 1 to each leg.

The Crusader SRMs are on its hips, not its legs.

Okay since some ppl are critical of the feasibility of leg guns then I'm just going to have to design one myself, hopefully this weekend.

Mechs are Bipedal (for the most part) weapon platforms. The same reason that weapons aren't put on the treads of a tank. Torso = Turret, Legs = Mobility

I just woke my household up laughing. Can you imagine what would happen with regards to recoil? I can't wait for the day that I see a smoking, spinning elemental trying to regain control after firing the autocannons in its legs.

yeah that gave me a good laugh as well, then I thought about it and if it was built right and with good training i can see lil Armored Jackie Chan's bouncing from mech limb to mech limb using the recoil of a leg cannon ;)

another one of those threads where you'd get the answer if you used your head a little bit instead of relying on everyone else to explain things to you.

Guns on legs don't work. If you're playing in a reasonably realistic style, your legs are going to to be in motion almost all the time and often faced in a different direction from the approaching enemy mechs. Even hip mounted weapons will have a hard time getting on target most of the time, and they are far more stable than anything mounted on the legs. Mounting weapons in the torso or on the arms just makes so much more tactical sense. Think about how much trouble it would be to engage in moble combat if your weapons were in constant motion, especial with the weapons convergence factor!

I think that small lasers on each digit on the mechs foot would be awesome.

The way I see it, if a gun is mounted on the legs, they will have their own stabilizers and actuators to keep them aimed properly.

[I think that even torso mounted weapons would have their own small stabilizers built into the mounting points anyways]

So yes, leg mounted weapons would be a feasible option, at least for lighter weapons...

I think the reason we wont see them in game is simple : your leg would take major damage and prevent you form walking if the weapon where to blow up also thats why I wont mount ammo there unless I have to.

Arm blows up : that sucks, but can still move. Still can shoot.
Torso blows up : ( if you have a standard engine anyway ) that really sucks may take the arm with it, but still can move. Still cans shoot.
Leg blows up : Aww **** me can't run might not be able to walk most likely will fall take even more damage form the fall. If you fall face first your pretty much a sitting duck.

It is one of the stupidest movies ever, and that's why it's hilarious.

Spoiler warning:
Spoiler

As some have said, with the hardpoint system you won't see very many mechs mounting leg weapons (because few mechs mount leg weapons in cannon) I expect pretty much all of those will be modeled as hip-based weapons. (hips = legs in Battletech, and it looks less Kookie to put a weapon on the hip, compared to the knee or something silly like that)
