How powerful are Machine Guns in the beta? I remember in Prior games that they absolutely mauled enemy mechs in CQC, do they still do lots of damage in MWO?

Against armor they kind of suck, but they are very good at ripping into internals and causing criticals from what I understand.

They are utterly worthless with no redeeming values whatsoever.

With the current patch they're pretty useless, since they can't do enough damage for effective crit-seeking even. A very few people use them for a distracting tactic, but that's a stretch in my opinion. You will almost never see them in anything but the Trial Mechs. Need to be buffed or removed.

As supplementary fire, they function passably for their weight. A few of my unit-mates have varieties of MG hunchies that put out respectable damage output. But they are weak otherwise.

MGs only do 0.4 DPS or 0.04 dmg per round for ten rounds per second and that dmg is spread out as they dont shoot dead straight. Even using 3 which is the current maximum that any mech can use is nothing short of just irritating to your opponent as the DPS is still only 1.2. Mind you firing that many MGs sounds pretty wicked but besides that they're just filler weapons when you wanna hear something other than laser pewpew. Flamers are even more useless than MGs lol.

0.04 damage per bullet, 10 bullets per second; 0.4 damage per second; 5 seconds of sustained fire to hit the tabletop damage of 2 seconds.

Every weapon in this game got a literal or figurative buff by firing more than once per ten seconds OR their damage was arbitrarily increased.

Machine guns and flamers got completely useless. They still do "double" their damage over ten seconds, but given the need to maintain aim and hit the same component to actually do meaningful damage, they are completely worthless.

No one will be boating machine guns and flamers like previous MW games. Of course, the hardpoint system wouldn't let that happen anyway.

The cool thing about MGs is it instantly lets you know who's a bad player.

People saying they're "crit seekers" also lets you know who is a forum-warrior and who actually plays the game.

One of the coolest sounding weapons in the game...but that's all they are good for.

MG's have range, flamers not so much.

as a supplement weapon they're not bad (Raven comes with double stock, so +2.4DPS with no +heat on top of 2ML's and an SRM and "Basically" infinite ammo at 2k/ton)

Given that it's 2 tons for 2MG's and a ton of ammo in the current game state, and 6 tons for an AC/2 with no ammo, it's a godsend on a light. Heavier mechs not so much.

If your looking for damage. Don't take em.

If you want to disable an atlas without to much effort, fire a constant stream of MG bullets at it, and watch the weapons break.

True story.

Best thing about people carrying machine guns is watching their ammo explode.

MGs and Flamers are support weapons. They support the notion that they suck.

Hey now, i've ruined a gaussapults day on my raven by Machinegunning the absolute -HELL- out of his torso while hurtling around him at 138kph

Nothing like watching one struggle futiley with ML's or less while you slowly SRM them to death, ehehehehe.

I am not entirely sure, I am basing this off of stuff I read and personal experience using them. In general if you want to use them as a source of damage you will only get creamed. There biggest value is the ability to shoot without using up heat. So you can shoot them while your guns are cooling down. They also take up little space.

The best way to use them is to pare them with a high damage weapon. One that will damage enemy armor, then you open up those damaged areas with machine gun fire. They seem to work better that way. Again, just my experience. Over all though they are mostly rubbish. If I have a mech that I don't load up with AC's or Gaus. I'd likely add in a couple machine guns. They may be worthless but if you are not using the ballastic slots for anything, they only cost 1 slot and 0.5 tons. Use them like I said above, shoot at damaged areas for better effect. I also use them against light mechs.
