cuz it's a frakkin robot. cheez. So it's a giant robot that we control. Does your fighter jet have hands and feet? We're in danger of overthought. I'm going to head back to the dropship.

People who need the word 'robot' to conjure the image of a BattleMech haven't an imagination. :)
People who think of BattleMechs as mere 'robots' must be educated and indoctrinated. :P
People who understand the concept of 31st century mechanised warfare are doing it right. :D

Not ALL BattleMechs have hands, just saying :)

I know, if I thought any more my head would go 'EEP!' and detonate...

If people refer to the mechs as robots, ask them this.

Are you a Robotwarrior or Mechwarrior?

i undestand that a robot is a machine built to perform some task, but i see a mech as being as much of a robot as a car or a tank. if someone does not know what a mech is, i would explain that it is a humanoid-shaped machine piloted by a person - not a "giant robot". what do you think?

i am not sure why they say that, a mech is much closer to a cyborg than a robot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mech
Mecha, also known as meka or mechs, is a broad genre of vehicles (normally walking vehicles) which are usually controlled by a pilot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robot
A robot is a mechanical device that can perform tasks automatically. It may – but need not – be humanoid in appearance. Some robots require some degree of guidance, which may be done using a remote control, or with a computer interface. A robot is usually an electro-mechanical machine that is guided by a program or circuitry. Robots can be autonomous, semi-autonomous or remotely controlled and range from humanoids such as ASIMO and TOPIO to Nano robots, 'swarm' robots, and industrial robots. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, a robot may convey a sense of intelligence or thought of its own.

Nobody says this is absolutely true, but it almost sounds to me like you are trying to discredit the post just because they are from wiki.
Just because you cannot always trust what is said on wiki does not mean that you need to discredit everything that is said there.
Allot of things on wiki are actual facts that have basis in numerous sources.
And even if an article dont have ties to other sources does not automatically mean that its not true.
Please try to be a little more open minded.

If I wanted to tell my gramma about the game I was playing, I would definately use a word in her own vocabulary. The closest would be robot.

well .. as google said:
ro·bot/ˈrōˌbät/

Noun:
  • A machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically.
  • (esp. in science fiction) A machine resembling a human being and able to replicate certain human movements and functions.

Robot is actually correct, using the less common yet still proliffic definition, Mechs are indeed robots.

a robot is autonomous (like data), a mech/mecha has a guy/guys inside controlling it (like gao gai gar or a veritech fighter from Macross), a remote is, well, remotely controlled and can be considered neither a robot or mecha though it has quasi-elements of both concepts. You could argue that a cyborg is a mecha but that's a stretch. Then there's the bioroid, a creature in Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross or the Boomers (cyberoids) in Bubblegum Crisis.

BT has mecha, but people enjoy saying, however inaccurately, giant stompy robots.

In Robotech, the VF or variable fighter were what we would call LAMs in BT...there was also the Destroid or Mecha which were the mechs you would know better as the Warhammer and Archer, but in RT were known as Tomahawk and Spartan.

As for if it is a Mech or a Robot, really, by looking at a picture can you tell if there is a guy piloting or not? Because if there is no pilot, it's a robot, if there is a pilot, it's a mech, sure not going to hold it against the lay person if they can't tell when glancing at them. I'm not likely to care enough even if they aren't a lay person. :D

Robot is easier to say than ten meter tall bipedal armored war machine.

Wut? "ten meter tall bipedal armored war machine" is 20% more cooler.
