an Eve Style portrait to start would be nice, Later a full body avatar, would be even cooler, but first let us get the game.

Hell yeah, I want me a $70 monocle.

I wouldn't mind creating the character's appearance as an avatar. If that's ever implemented, I'd bet the options would be limited. I do not want to have to walk around just to get from point a shop to my inventory, however. As a matter of fact, I don't want to walk around at all. All in all, not too important as long as I can buy/sell/equip/launch straight from my Mech Bay. I don't mind if the option is in, but I have a better chance of seeing the MechWarrior who represents me if I draw him myself than letting a limited customization decide that. It'd be cool to see how a FRR MechWarrior uniform looks like.

Just a picture with no movement would be enough for me. Creating a 3d model of a face and then making it move takes a lot of work.
Making a face generator were you can make your own face like in EVE or Fallout 3 would probably require tremendous amount of work unless they got themselves some middleware from another game developer like CCP or Bethesda.

I imagine that for every five 3d portraits that move EVE style they could create one more mech.
What would you want? Another mech to chose from or another handfull of faces that move?

I'm with Hanse, I think Eve Online did it best. It'd be cool to have a small avatar to go with your callsign, and give yourself a bit of character. Much further down the road if the game can support it I'd love to be able to walk around a Merc/House owned dropship and commiserate with other affiliated people around a target planet or drop zone.

I think it fits the overall design philosophy of focusing on the pilot operating a huge machine vs. the typical first person shooter. It also adds to the immersion and possibility for roleplaying, which I'm sure at least the hardcore portion of the community can appreciate. This would be a great "stretch" feature that would be cool to see, but it's definitely not a part of the core gameplay.

Cool idea, though.
