I just began playing so I realize I have a very limited view of the game as a whole but at the same time I am going through what everyone else new will go through when the open beta begins. I very happy to see MWO and how much attention the developers have put in the mechs/weapons/combat system. I know others have discussed the current limitations of the beta such as in this post http://mwomercs.com/...r/page__st__260 . I have a couple of concerns that I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Frustrations
1) Getting rolled over by premades. Ok, i'm new, don't know what I'm doing. I have read some of the strat guides and think they are great. My only concern is that even as I improve, i will still be at an enormous disadvantage compared to a premade. My concern is as this goes live it will be very easy for people who are borderline mech fans to try a couple of battles and get frustrated and leave never to return. I realize a game isn't for everyone but in general people want to have fun and getting your butt handed to you while you are trying to learn makes you question if you really want to keep doing it.

Question
Will there be any way to operate/play with the mechs outside of pvp combat?

Frustration
How am I supposed to meet anyone? I know the forums are very lively but is there going to be a way to easily interact with others in the game outside of matches? I played MW 3 and 4 and then went to online gaming like World of Warcraft. I realize it is very different but still having a way to meet/hang out with others outside of matches is going to be important to really get people who are new to mechwarrior to want to stay.

I promise I am not a hater and I am actually very excited to see a company developing another mechwarrior game. I just am concerned that people will get turned off from the game because right now it seems solely focused on matches that are often one sided. What are the long term plans to help people learn the game/mechs without just "throwing them to the wolves" in matches.

your best bet in meeting people currently is TeamSpeak

Download Teamspeak and log onto the No Guts No Galaxy server: 63.209.37.2:9196

Pop into the Looking for Group? channel. I do not have much experience using this, but from what I hear you usually only have to wait a few minutes before someone starts forming a group. Send the group leader a friend invite or accept his, accept the invitation to join their group and move into the proper Dropship channel.

Pretty soon you might meet a group of regulars who are usually on around the same time and you can form your own groups. There are also lobbies in which you can chat if you are not able to play.

I understand team speak is a good way to meet people and I probably will do as you suggest. My concern is I had to come to the forum to find that out and these servers aren't part of the game. How do the designers plan for people to meet others in the game and will there be ways to interact with each other and play with the mechs outside of actual matches?

The matchmaking is being changed starting tomorrow iirc and will continue to develop over time. There is an awesome post here http://mwomercs.com/...rns-oct-122012/explaining the changes. And just a FYI, not every game you get "rolled over" is by a premade. Most are pugs just like you, its just the other team has beaucoup experience in the beta.

The devs are working on a training ground type area to test mechs/practice. Sorry I cannot find the thread with this in it currently but I know they've talked about it being developed.

I agree we need some kind of way in game to meet people before and after a match. A lobby of sorts would be ideal and is in the works iirc. For now though the best way to meet folks is either on TS (look here for some servers http://mwomercs.com/...e-chat-servers/) or try to remember the good/nice folks you played with before and add them to your friends list in game and make a group.

Besides Teamspeak, there is the integrated client C3. Register, log in, and search for the tag word MWO, and join a room with a couple of people, and they will get you in a group. Easy, peasy.
I played for dozens of matches before I found a group. A group is not necessary to win, but it helps. Part of the fun is getting in a good group of random players and still stomping the premades.

C3 is the official voice client for MWO.

When you form a Group in game (not just a match, but forming a Group in the social tab) it will attempt to bring all those Group members into the same C3 channel automatically (unless C3 is disabled in your options)

If you do not have C3, when you form a Group it will present you the link to download C3.

community assumptions are that C3 will become more integrated at the game progresses, so I'd get some practice using C3.

Note: There are also changes coming to the matchmaking to remove 8-man teams from the same queue as small teams/solo players. This will take time, however.

No offense but you need to realize this is a closed beta. The focus is on fixing the code. Working on community based topics can wait until open beta. This isn't an official "game" yet, just a project we're helping with. And yes, ts3 is the best way to meet people currently.

Regarding fustration #1. Please understand that Mechwarrior Online IS a team game. This game is not like WOW where you can play quests solo. If your intention is to play solo, then I would suggest as some of the others above have said is get on one of the open teamspeak servers that are providing MWO matchups. The other thing to consider is to look around for a casual merc corp or one of houses that allow for casual players. You can also check out the corp I belong to. BWC realizes that we have real lives and does not expect you to be there 24x7.

Also check out the Merc forums:
